hela Sverige The research institute Swerim provides applied research within mining engineering, process metallurgy and materials and manufacturing engineering, mainly for the mining, steel and metals industry. Swerim has 190 co-workers in two locations in Sweden - Luleå and Stockholm.
At the Swedish Institute for Mining, Metallurgy and Materials (Swerim) we work alongside producers and users of advanced metallic materials. Typical work includes development of new materials, material solutions and manufacturing processes. We have a large 'toolbox' at our disposal including pilot plant facilities for labscale simulation of manufacturing processes, characterisation on a wide range of length scales and various modelling frameworks. The opportunities provided by the large scale facilities being built in Lund, Hamburg and elsewhere is of great interest to us since it will provide us with new characterisation possibilities and the possibility to study material behaviour under operando conditions. To facilitate the interaction between industry, our institute, academia and the facilities we seek a highly motivated scientist with a background in diffraction techniques. You will be fully employed by Swerim/Department for Material and Process Development in Stockholm but you will be placed in Lund alongside with another Swerim scientist (also to be employed) and four scientists at Rise Institutes of Sweden (RISE) working towards other industries with a similar type of scope.
Your role
You will have a vital role in facilitating access for the metallic materials industry to large scale facilities. Typical work will include
• Outreach to industry, related research groups and other partners
• Engage in strategic initiatives such as Bir2gain/Metalbeams that aims to increase the industrial relevance of MAX IV and P21@PETRAIII
• Run demonstrator projects all the way from problem formulation in close collaboration with industry to beam time application, data collection and interpretation.
• Help commissioning end-stations/sample environments and relevant post processing tools.
The current position is aimed towards diffraction methods and x-ray microscopy. We believe this type of profile will be very relevant for our type of materials/processes because the techniques provided at e.g. NanoMAX@MAX VI or P21@PETRA III will provide complementary information to the techniques we typically use in this type of research, e.g. SEM, EBSD, TEM and lab XRD. We also believe that working closely with our electron microscopy specialists will aid your understanding of process-structure-property relationships in our materials.
Suitable background
We believe a suitable background for the position is a PhD in material science/physics/chemistry. A solid understanding of diffraction is a prerequisite, ideally from synchrotron studies. Previous experience working with metals and alloys is not necessary but considered a merit. Data processing and interpretation of large datasets and also development of new post processing tools will be a significant part of the work so you need to be comfortable with at least one high level programming language like Python.
To be successful in this role you need to have, beside your scientific merits, a true engineering mind-set and enjoy digging into industrially relevant problems. Communication is very important - you need to appreciate a networking role and be able to share your research independently of the target audience. We hope that you will spend many years ahead at our institute so communication is also a key for a seamless integration to our team in Stockholm. Looking forward to reading your application! Deadline for the application is February 21th.
