The Detector Group is part of the Instrument Technology Division under the Science Directorate. Our division provides the underlying technology required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at ESS. Specifically, Detector Group is working with partners worldwide to provide novel neutron detectors, meeting challenging requirements with diverse technologies, many adopted from other disciplines.

Description of main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a workshop assistant offering support to the Detector Group. We will consider offering several positions. The profiles of the positions that may be considered are as follows:

Workshop assistant, involving working with the preparation and construction of the novel neutron detectors for instruments at ESS. Tasks and duties are varied, as the daily schedule demands. They vary from setting up equipment and areas, preparation of sub-assemblies, repetitive assembly tasks, mechanical welding or soldering, testing and verification, maintaining and transferring the inventory and other typical activities in an active workshop. For such a position, evidence of mechanical aptitude and attention to detail is important, as well as an interest in a technical and mechanical direction.
Or Workshop assistant for electronics, involving test and verification of electronics items, electronics ordering, inventory and house keeping, repair and maintainance of electronics, simple PCB design, assembly of equipment. For such a position, evidence of aptitude in electronics and attention to detail is important, as well as an interest in electronics.
Or Workshop assistant for data analysis and detector testing. This involved testing detectors and general house keeping, data analysis, coding maintainance, and contributing to writing scientific and technical reports. For such a position, data analysis experience, good code practice, good knowledge of python and/or C++, knowledge of detectors is important.

This is primarily a junior summer internship and offers an opportunity to acquire and develop skills and be involved in the creation of a world-class facility. We are working with world leading partners to achieve something very special, to contribute to becoming a leading research facility.

We are looking for a self-motivated, creative person, service oriented and engaging. In particular, we are seeking knowledge, skills and competence as stated in the individual profiles above.

As a person, you must be a good listener and creative. You must be flexible in your approach to work and good at dealing with a range of people. You must be proactive and motivated. You must fit into our culture and share our values.

Experience of working in a research environment would be particularly relevant, as would any experience you may have gained in an international environment. Your English skills need to be good in both verbal and written form. Basic knowledge of other European Languages would be useful.

Other information:
This is for upto 5 summer workers in detector group this summer. Final number will be determined by quality and profile of candidates.

Duration & Location



The position is a fixed term position from June 2019 - August 2019.

Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.? The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
