LPI is launching a novel and ambitious programme in 2019 which seeks to examine how international peace policies- and actors engage with conflict-affected communities and local civil society and engages relevant stakeholders to ensure more meaningful participation of those affected by conflicts in global conversations on peace-and conflict. Are you passionate about seeing a more equitable world and interested in asking the fundamental questions about the current status quo and keen to find new answers, together with others? Do you want to be a part of a new team who is seeking to 'ignite a rethink' on global policy engagement on peacebuilding? The Life & Peace Institute is now looking for a committed and experienced professional to provide overarching strategic policy advice for our work, in the role of Strategic Peacebuilding Policy Advisor.

About us:
The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international centre that supports and promotes nonviolent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action. At the core of this work is the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing the preconditions for building peace. For the past thirty years, LPI has partnered with civil society organisations and research institutions to strengthen locally-led peacebuilding processes through capacity development and accompaniment. Through programmes in Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Sudan, LPI brings a range of participatory approaches and methodologies that are effective in creating space for dialogue, violence prevention, and peacebuilding action. LPI also supports the development of policies that help to improve the lives of people in places affected by violence, including through its Horn of Africa Regional Programme based in Addis Ababa. Increasingly, LPI is also seeking to link its work to the global policy discussions on peacebuilding and conflict transformation with a view to inform the theoretical and policy debates with the practice of lived experience of peacebuilders.

About your role:
The Strategic Policy Advisor will guide and support the implementation of LPI's overarching and programmatic policy advocacy efforts and monitoring progress towards agreed policy goals as well as support coordination with LPI's global policy efforts, in close coordination with managers and LPI colleagues. Her/his main tasks will consist of, but are not limited to three main areas of work:

1. Support to policy work in individual programmes
• Support teams in mapping policy stakeholders in key contexts at regional, national and local levels.
• Support the development of annual policy plans in the programmes and provide guidance, capacity strengthening and mentoring to programme staff related to the implementation of annual policy plans.
• Support the development of policy briefs and other policy outputs emanating from LPI's programmatic work, in collaboration with the Knowledge and Learning Unit (KLU).
• Where relevant, represent programmes vis-à-vis policy stakeholders at various levels, in collaboration with programme management.

2. Support to LPI's cross-organizational policy work :
• Identify and support the synergies for joined-up policy work across programmes and offices.
• Monitor key thematic areas, policy spaces and actors relevant to LPI's work and strategic priorities and advice on strategic opportunities to prioritize and seize.
• Engage in networking and representation on behalf of the Institute at various levels as well as nurturing existing policy-related relationships and liaising/coordinating with key civil society platforms and networks of which LPI is a member.

3. Support to LPI's Global Policy efforts:
• Support a co-designed process to develop a 2020-2022 global policy pilot programme.
• Engage in relationship- and coalition-building and deepen bilateral engagement with global networks and platforms relevant to LPI's global policy efforts.
• Support the drafting of donor reports.
This is a full-time position to be located in one of LPI's offices in Uppsala (Sweden), Nairobi (Kenya) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), upon agreement with the successful candidate. A one-year fixed term contract will be offered, with good opportunities for extension, based on performance.

About you:
• At least a Master's degree in peace-and conflict studies, global studies and international relations, political science, public policy and international development, or related fields.
• A minimum of 5 to 7 years of professional experience of policy engagement for peacebuilding in civil society, government and/or intergovernmental bodies.
