The Church of Sweden, Uppsala, is a partnership between six urban parishes and the cemeteries of Uppsala. In 2014, five of the parishes formed a collective parish, Uppsala parish, with a shared board and centralised management. Together, we want to be the local church for 180,000 residents of Uppsala.

Uppsala Cathedral's Stained Glass Studio are looking for a new stained glass conservator to join the studio for a six month contract.

Uppsala Cathedral's Stained Glass Studio opened in 2013 as the first stained glass conservation studio in Sweden. There was a demand for stained glass conservators due to the many windows at the cathedral needing care. The studio now undertakes conservation projects all over Sweden, as well as Uppsala Cathedral. Today the studio has 2 full time and 1 part time conservators and is part of Uppsala parish.

The studio is located close to Uppsala Cathedral in the heart of Uppsala. The work will mainly be done in the studio, but also includes site work when you spend days or weeks away.

Working description;

The majority of stained glass in Sweden is from the 19th century and few medieval stained glass windows survive in situ. However, some remain, most of which are located on the island of Gotland. This year, the studio has the prestigious opportunity to work with the parish in Stenkumla Church, Gotland, on three windows that contain original medieval glass panels from when the church was built c.1300.

Your tasks would focus on this project and involves; de-installation on site, documentation, cleaning, edge-bonding, framing, re-installation etc. All work is dictated according to the conservation policy, and by the contract set by Stenkumla Church.

As well as conserving the medieval stained glass panels, you will also participate in the other projects, both internal and external, that are ongoing in the studio.

Completed studies in stained glass conservation and/or experience conserving medieval glass is required. The studio is small and we work together as a team. Therefore, it is important that you are willing to collaborate and work within the team as well as having the ability to work on your own. Flexibility and the ability to find solutions is important.

We collaborate with other professions, such as glaziers, carpenters, blacksmiths, stone masons etc. as well as representatives for the church, and write conservation policies in discussion with antiquarians and the County Administrative Board.

The working language in the studio is English, verbal and written fluency is a requirement of this job. Driver license is required.

The duration of the contract is six months starting at the end of February/beginning in March with the possibility of extending the contract.
