The arena
Discovery Science is a global function within Innovative Medicines, IM, in AstraZeneca. Discovery Science supports innovative medicine project teams from multifunctional capability centers in Alderley Park, Boston and Mölndal. Discovery Sciences is mainly involved in early lead generation through the late Lead Optimization stage of drug discovery. It is composed of several capabilities where Reagent and Assay Development (RAD) is one among several others such as Screening Sciences and Structure & Biophysics. This position will be placed in the RAD Department where we focus on delivering different types of reagents and assays for high impact into the drug development.
The role
To provide strong expertise in the competency of Cellular Assay Development and with a strong focus on imaging-based cellular assays. To devise, champion and develop scientific areas, aligned with project needs. To be an authority in the cell science and cellular assay area, and lead this from a lab-based perspective to make significant contributions to the practical delivery of project goals. To coach and support more junior scientists by advising and challenging them, but also by providing expert advice and interpretation of complex data. To provide disciplinary scientific leadership and represent the department at interdisciplinary meetings internally as well as externally, and to publish novel science in high impact journals. To propose experimental strategies, troubleshoot problems and make significant contributions to the practical delivery of projects in accordance with SHE requirements and in compliance with all AZ Corporate responsibility policies.
It is essential to have good social and communication skills and to be a strong team player. Candidates should be able to work independently, take own initiatives and have a positive, goal oriented and problem solving attitude. Good organisational skills are required and you should be comfortable in presenting your results. Excellent English is required, both spoken and in writing.
Tasks:
To develop imaging-based cellular assays for target identification, target validation and phenotypic assay development
To use qualitative and quantitative image-based cellular assays and analysis methods for drug screening, cell profiling/QC and protein expression/functionality in a biologically and statistically relevant manner
Expertise in cell-based assay design including knowledge of detection technologies, including spectroscopic (e.g. absorbance, fluorescence modalities), luminescent, label-free detection and imaging
Practical understanding of assay development and optimisation, including statistical tools such as ...
