Groundwater is a natural resource of fundamental importance to society. For proper management of the wide variety of risks relating to groundwater there is a need to advance our understanding on how to better use available measurement and test data for describing groundwater systems. This position provides an opportunity to perform in-depth hydrogeological research with the purpose of utilizing the results for practical application in industry and the wider society. The research position is directed at gaining a deeper understanding on how to evaluate groundwater systems by time-series analysis, data from hydraulic testings, stochastic numerical modeling, statistical and spatial data analysis, and machine learning.

This position is advertised as part of a research project at the research group Engineering Geology at the Division of Geology and geotechnics, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. The Engineering Geology research group is a leader nationally and well recognized internationally in risk assessment and decision support in the fields of hydrogeology, underground construction, drinking water supply and protection, and site remediation. We have a long tradition of interdisciplinary research with the fields of mathematics, statistics, and economics. We also have an extensive collaboration with industrial partners, authorities, branch-organizations, other universities and research institutes in Sweden and internationally, primarily through EU-projects. Most of our research is applied and performed in collaboration with partners.

Major responsibilities
The major responsibilities include:
- Perform high quality research on quantitative evaluation of groundwater systems by time-series analysis, data analysis of hydraulic data, stochastic numerical modeling, statistical and spatial data analysis, and machine learning for publication in Q1 scientific journals.
• Apply for research funding to support further development of the research group.
• Collaborate with industrial partners in research and utilization of research results through e.g. development of model tools, preparation of guidelines and handbooks, and development of courses for practitioners.
• Perform teaching and supervision on Bachelor's, Master's and PhD levels.
• Communicate scientific concepts and research results both orally and in writing.

Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.

Qualifications
• Postdoc doing quantitative hydrogeological research.
• Strong scientific publication in quantitiative hydrogeology. Publication in risk assessment is a merit.
• Experience from teaching hydrogeology at Bachelor's and Master's levels.
• Excellent oral and writing and communication skills in English. Swedish is a merit.
• Proficiency in high-level programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Matlab)
• Industry experience in applied hydrogeology.
• Strong educational background in quantitative hydrogeology and civil engineering.
