Genetics as a discipline has expanded dramatically in recent years, particularly in the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of a growing number of common and less common medical conditions. This is reflected throughout the region and in the rise in the need for reinforcement within clinical genetics. In response to this need, the Department of Laboratory Medicine has been instructed by the healthcare executive at Region Örebro County to establish a Clinical Genetics Unit at Örebro University Hospital. Applications are invited from experienced specialists in clinical genetics.

Duties
There is already a certain degree of expertise at the Department of Laboratory Medicine within genetic and molecular biology analysis, covering both diagnostics and therapeutic markers for a range of cancer diseases. However, contact routes for clinical guidance and referral assessments need to be opened up to support the work that is taking place in both primary and specialist healthcare. There is also a need to build up specialist knowledge in this area in the form of supervision of resident physicians and other professionals who require in-service training.

In the dual role of medical director and specialist/consultant in clinical genetics, the successful applicant will be responsible for the build-up, day-to-day running, and ongoing development of the new unit. This specialist area will be organised as a separate operating unit within the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The work will take place in consultation with a frontline manager, who will have financial and HR responsibility at the unit. Research and supervision of students and less experienced colleagues will form an important part of the overall remit.

Qualifications
Specialist in clinical genetics. The establishment of a Clinical Genetics Unit at Örebro University Hospital will involve meeting the need for an ongoing exchange of expertise and transfer of knowledge within and beyond the Uppsala-Örebro region, highlighting the importance of networking and collaboration.

'Genomic Medicine Sweden' is a key national initiative in which Region Örebro County is represented on both the steering committee and the organisation committee.

The position requires a proven ability to work independently and with the requisite resourcefulness. Establishing, developing and maintaining good, effective relationships and networks is essential.

An interest in strengthening our university healthcare programme would be a merit.

Region Örebro County and the University Hospital, in partnership with Örebro University, has a comprehensive appointments programme for positions ranging from doctoral student to associate professor. The programme offers excellent scope to conduct work-based clinical research.

Form of employment
This is a permanent, full-time appointment, and can be offered as a combined position at Örebro University.

Working hours
Full-time, daytime. We offer a flexible working hours arrangement.
