The Arena
AstraZeneca is currently making large investments to increase our research capability in Inhaled Pharmaceuticals, in Mölndal, Sweden. We are investing in new equipment, new technologies and more people. We now aim to increase the number of people working with Product Development for Inhalation by 50%. We therefore seek people with knowledge in various skills relevant for inhaled drug delivery, such as formulation science, analytical chemistry, solid state properties, device development and biopharmaceutical sciences.
AstraZeneca Mölndal is one of AstraZeneca's three core sites for drug research, with about 2.500 employees at site. At Product Development, Sweden, a sub-division of Pharmaceutical Development, we focus on the fields of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases and on Respiratory, Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases. Within Product Development Inhalation we have an exciting pipeline, consisting of both new molecules and new devices. The unit currently comprises 80 people, dedicated to research and development for new inhaled drug products and we want you to be a part of growing our expertise in this area.
The Role
Product Development is looking for an enthusiastic Solid State/Material Scientist who, along with having significant project responsibility, will provide input in the area of solid state/material characterization during the formulation development of orally inhaled drug products.
The role is primarily laboratory based, where a combination of theoretical and technical expertise in material science is a must, as e.g. the solid-state composition of a powder inhalation formulation is considered to be one of the critical quality attributes.
Examples of key attributes for the role are the following, recognizing that each applicant may not have all of these:
Characterizing the architecture of ordered mixtures using imaging techniques, eg SEM and optical microscopy.
Have a good understanding of surface analysis and techniques for determining physical properties, eg particle size, distribution and shape.
Have the ability to understand powder behavior especially for optimum aerosolization properties and deposition characteristics, optimized during design of particle interactions driven by particle size (including nanomaterials), density, morphology, composition, surface properties.
Be able to apply toolbox techniques such as thermal methods, vapor-gas sorption, diffraction and spectroscopy to provide high quality input to formulation development.
