We're doing exciting work with the Shuttleworth Foundation to ensure that attribution of digital works happens easily and automatically, taking full advantage of open standards for metadata. This will ensure that images licensed with open licences such as Creative Commons become easier to use, and that creators, regardless of what licenses they use, get credit for the work they do.

This is challenging work that will ultimately change the process of sharing and re-using works and we're looking for a software engineer to join our team. One of the priorities for the development team is to establish a proper technical infrastructure for metadata: to create the fundamental libraries that will enable the embedding of licensing metadata in a wide variety of file types, as well as improving metadata support in existing open source tools. Some of the relevant standards include CC-REL, ODRL, PLUS, XMP, and RDF. As this is an emerging area, we participate in standardisation efforts and additional standards might become relevant in the future.

The software engineer will work together with our lead developer on defining priorities and developing this infrastructure, as well as the building blocks necessary to achieve our goals. As all our development is free and open source software, the job will also include some coordination and participation in both internal and external forums, primarily mailing lists and community events.

Skills required:

• Development experience in C and Python, with experience in any of C++, Java and/or Javascript meriting. Additional languages such as Perl, Ruby, or PHP are also useful but not required
• Experience from free and open source tools for software development in a Unix/Linux environment (Emacs, Autotools, etc). Experience of Windows and MacOSX development is also useful.
• Proven ability to quickly learn and implement unfamiliar technologies
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Experience from sharing and using works under a Creative Commons or similar licence
• Experience of metadata standards are beneficial

Formal qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field, or proven track record of excellence in the field
• Two or more years of experience from software development

The developer works from his or her own location with an open invitation to the office in Gothenburg, Sweden. Some international travel is required to participate in conferences, workshops, and other meetings. The position is either an employment (for staff within Sweden) or a contracted position. Salary comensurate with experience.

Please submit your application together with a CV and state your availability to start work within the next few months, as well as the extent of your availability (part- or full time) to jobs@commonsmachinery.se .
