The Company is seeking an experienced engineer to lead its software development work, reporting directly to the CEO. This person will build a development team over time and be responsible for all aspects of software design and support, including contract developers, and requirements and specifications through collaboration with Giraff customers and users.
This individual must have strong Java development experience, working in a dynamic product environment, ideally including startup experience. The position is formally located in Västerås but once the individual is "up to speed" he/she could be located anywhere as long as they are able to be in Västerås as needed (no more than one day per week). Compensation will include stock warrants and the position represents an excellent opportunity to be at the founder level of a fast-growing, successful company.
Background:
Giraff Technologies designs and manufactures a mobile telepresence device called the "Giraff" that enables someone to virtually visit a remote location across the Internet. With the Giraff they can communicate with others via videoconferencing and remotely navigate around the environment.
The entire Giraff service solution is made up of the Giraff hardware, the Pilot software client that enables remote connections, the Sentry administrative database that manages Giraffs, users and overall service delivery, and an implementation and support process. The Giraff hardware platform is a stable product and most of the development work is now focused on software.
The Company is currently focused on the Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) market in Europe, where care organizations such as Swedish municipalities use the Giraff to assist in home care for elderly persons. The Company's key market advantage at this time lies in early access to and understanding of AAL customers.
General Requirements:
• The position is officially in Västerås, but the individual can be located anywhere as long as they are able to be in Västerås on a frequent basis (e.g. one day per week).
• Excellent communications skills, especially working with people at different technical levels
• Fluent in Swedish and English
• Ability and flexibility to work in the dynamic environment of a startup company
• Ability to manage a virtual organization including outside contractors, establish plans and lead execution with internal and external groups
• Strong product development experience including direct user interaction
Technical Requirements:
The single most important requirement is experience with Java development.
The following skills are not required but highly useful in the Giraff development environment:
• Ruby on Rails development experience
• Database design and normalization (including SQL)
• Swing GUI application development
• C/C++
