A one year research position in Mercury Biogeochemistry is announced at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Umeå. The department includes 90 people of about 10 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystem processes and to progress the principles of forest ecosystem management. Mercury is a globally spread pollutant locally having severe consequences on wildlife and human populations. The aim of the project is to identify and quantify the molecular scale mechanisms of Hg(II) reduction to gaseous Hg(0), taking place in soils, sediments and anoxic lake water.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates will have a PhD and research experience in the research field of mercury biogeochemistry, including experience of using synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to resolve the chemical speciation of Hg in natural environments.
