DICE Operations creates and operates the next-generation services that power Battlefield, Star Wars & Mirror?s Edge.
About DICE Operations
DICE Operations handles most parts outside core game development for DICE. It is made up of two groups:
The Service group focuses on running online services for all of DICEs games in a reliable and efficient manner.
The Systems group focuses on building highly scalable backend systems which the game teams subsequently use when creating new player experiences.
Role overview
DICE Operations are looking for a Technical Director for its Service group. The TD will be the authority on any technology related matters within the group. A core part of the role is to make technical decisions and take responsibility for those decisions. The TD will be collaborating tightly with the TD for the Systems group, and is part of Operations leadership.
The TD is responsible for overseeing and improving how the Service group operates the online services. Automating more of the deployment processes, increasing reliability and fidelity of service monitoring, reducing operational costs, and ensuring that problems within the services that affect end users get resolved in a timely manner. In general, solving problems with technology instead of processes or raw man-power.
There are many in-house projects within the Service group. A successful TD will empower individuals and teams, and maximize their opportunities to accomplish great things. Acting as subject matter expert when needed, but avoiding micromanagement.
There are many partnerships with other groups within EA. A successful TD will build close relationships with these and drive change across the whole organization.
Work task examples
Collaboration with the greater EA
• Evangelize DICE Operations within other parts of EA
• Maintain a good collaboration environment with other parts of EA
• Drive EA-wide change efforts that directly or indirectly result in better player experiences
Internal strategic work
• Define, evangelize and implement DICE Operations' tech strategy together with Systems TD
• Help build a robust organization within DICE Operations
• Provide team and project leadership
Facilitate personal growth
• Lead by example. Strive for excellence. Encourage and challenge people to grow as developers
• Drive internal education initiatives within DICE Operations
• Leadership responsibility for a number of engineers, including salary and performance reviews
Provide technical expertise
• Know DICE Operations' technology stack and operational procedures
• Provide input on architectural and operational work, both on a high level as well as on a detail level
Stay relevant
• Keep up to date with industry technologies and revise Operations adaptation of these on an ongoing basis
• Do some development and some operational work every year!
