Senior Safety Engineer, HV Battery

Join us as Calibration & Design group Leader at Controls & Calibration group within the section Traction Battery System. We are dedicated to electrify our brand in a broad effort with Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). At the engineering department of Propulsion Energy Systems, we are responsible for design and delivery of the technical solution of Traction Battery Systems for electrified vehicles. We cover the complete mechanical, electrical and software product development. We are the core competence centre in Northern Europe in regards to Lithium Ion technology and automotive battery systems.
Controls & Calibration group in Volvo Cars is a new group focused on the SW functionality and the Li-Ion expertize for the Traction Battery, used in electrified vehicles. We are taking major steps in taking SW-development In-house and performing more In-house calibration to reach improved results.
As Senior Safety Engineer for High Voltage Battery, you will support development and qualification of energy storage systems. Main tasks includes generation of safety requirements from cell level, up to system level, evaluating functional specifications in account of vehicle interrelationship to influence system design for battery safety critical applications. This requires a precise and fundamental evaluation of cell technology, equipment and procedures for controlling and reduce risks of hazards resulting into recommendations of safety criteria.
You will work to improve the quality of the battery system by bringing a state-of the art technologies and experience to the team. We are looking for someone to coordinate our team of engineers, ensuring quality with an agile approach with focus on the work that adds the most value.
Main responsibilities
Controls and Calibration is a small and energetic team, responsible for the Traction Battery control functionality as well as Li-Ion cell expertize at Volvo Cars. Within the team you will be responsible mainly to:
* Provide technical expertise in assessing, addressing hazards and risks for the electrochemical energy storage system, to develop and interpret system safety requirement, from cell, to module and to pack level, including functional safety (including Safety Hazards Analysis; Fault tree analysis; FMEA)
* Coordinate assessments, lead safety-critical design reviews, interpret findings and communicate with supplier and take the responsibility to carry out hazard and risk methods consistently throughout the entire vehicle platform and upcoming electric vehicles PHEV/BEV
* Effectively define and integrate completely new types of battery systems with an iterative process improvement, including documentation, and an agile, cross-functional team.
* Make lifetime estimations, based on excellent knowledge in battery aging mechanisms (electrical (loss of energy/power)/thermal/mechanical (swelling)) and cell chemistries
* Planning and attending safety review meetings
Required qualifications
* PhD or Master degree in Electro-Chemistry, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
* 5-10 years of work experience as Battery safety engineer or similar
* Expert knowledge in battery systems and standards
* Knowledge of cell/module/pack testing (test code generation), Product safety engineering including standards (performance & safety) and understanding of requirements for Energy storage systems
* Fluent in English (written and spoken)
* Driver's license "B"
Personal qualities
Due to your senior position, you should possess good communication, presentation and educational skills. You should have the ability to assess different technical solutions, prepare and present technical reports. Moreover, excellent ability to read and understand industry standards and technical documentation will help you to excel on this position. You should be able to act independently, as well as to collaborate within your team and other stakeholders. The last, but not least, you should be result oriented, be able to think from customer perspective and have a structured way of working to deliver upon expectations.
