We are looking for a senior scientist with a strong background and expertise in Histology/Morphology as well as a broad background in in-vitro technologies. This for an assignment at the department CVMD at AstraZeneca in Gothenburg.

The Arena:

CVMD Innovative Medicines within AZ is accountable for the discovery and the development of new drugs in the cardiovascular and metabolic arena. There are three main strategic areas - cardiovascular/heart failure (CHF), diabetes (insulin resistance and islets health) and chronic kidney diseases. In the heart failure area our goal is to develop therapies for CHF patients by activating endogenous cardiac stem cells in the heart to regenerate the lost myocardium. If successful such a therapy will offer a potential cure for patients who are dying of heart failure today and an entirely new treatment paradigm.

Within the department of Heart Failure, the team Cell and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) is accountable to deliver key scientific expertise to support progress of projects in the portfolio with excellence in the cardiovascular and metabolic arena.

The role:

The role is a shared Histologist/In-Vitro role and reports into the Team Leader CMP and supports projects with scientific input in the morphology/in-vitro area and delivers key immunohistochemistry/in-vitro data to projects.

We are looking for an individual with a strong background and expertise in Histology/Morphology as well as a broad background in in-vitro technologies. The successful candidate has a broad expertise in histology, automated image analysis. As well as a broad expertise in cardiac stem cells and in-vitro technologies. She/He independently designs and conducts experiments and analyses & evaluates the data. In addition she/he presents the data at team and project team meetings.

Minimum requirements

• A degree in relevant discipline plus experience in histology and a broad in-vitro knowledge.

• Experience in pharmaceutical R&D and academia.

• Deep understanding of tissue morphology, histology, immunohistochemistry, image analysis and stereology.

• Broad understanding of primary cell culturing and cell based assays.

• Statistical analysis of data.

• Strong oral and written communication skills. English is essential. Swedish is appreciated but is not a request.

Preferred experience and key factors

• Experience from pharmaceutical industry.

• Knowledge and experience of detecting various stem cells in the heart, preferably work around cardiomyocytes.

• Knowledge and experience of in vitro models/assays for heart failure.
