Main tasks and responsibilities

The general responsibilities of the Senior Researcher, working together with partner organizations in West Africa and the Sahel, and under the guidance of the Programme Director are the following:
• The implementation of the West African projects in collaboration with the SIPRI Programme staff, other SIPRI Researchers and the partner organizations;
• The development of a quantitative methodology designed to monitor human security developments at a local level and to contribute to stabilisation policies' effectiveness;
• The elaboration of questionnaires to be disseminated (manually or via tablet computers) and the quantitative data analysis;
• Direct engagement with African partner organizations and civil society organizations involved in research and outreach activities, particularly on quantitative analysis, capacity building training workshops, outreach activities and events;
• Strategic dissemination of research results;
• Regular contributions to the Programme's research output, including seminar presentations, panel discussions and high-quality research publications, both well-researched articles and policy-relevant commentaries and blogs;
• Proactive contribution to the programme's fund-raising plan (identification of coherent themes, possible partnerships, funding opportunities, grant and proposal writing, including complex multi-lateral institutions applications and budgeting and financing of their own research);
• Contribution to the design of Programme activities and participation in the collective life of the Institute and
• Management and mentoring of junior staff and interns.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have the following experience and skills:
• More than five years' experience as a (Senior) researcher initiating and carrying out their own (quantitative) research projects;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Extensive and broad knowledge of the Sahel/West Africa region;
• Demonstrable skills in quantitative analysis, methods and questionnaire design, including relevant software applications;
• A pre-existing extensive network of contacts in Africa and international organisations;
• A track record in acquisition, with proposal and grant writing skills;
• A demonstrated ability to manage researchers and other junior staffs;
• Fluency in English and French (both written and spoken).

Previous experience working with civil society organizations in West Africa and a deep understanding of dynamics in Mali, especially in the northern and central regions, are considered assets.

Varaktighet, arbetstid
Starting from 1 September 2018, or as soon as possible. The appointment will be, initially, for a two-year period, and renewable. The post is full-time, and the successful applicant will be expected to reside in Stockholm with travel to West Africa.
