The Biophysics team in Gothenburg is part of a larger Discovery Sciences (DS) organisation (300+ people, of which 100+ in Gothenburg), which supports disease areas (iMeds) globally across the company. The common denominator for DS is that skills and expertises are highly specialised or capital-demanding, and therefore are gathered in a centralised organisation. Discovery Sciences provides state of art support for hit finding, lead optimisation and target identification and validation. We deliver on projects with compounds, reagents, structures, screens, statistics and computational models, in Gothenburg primarily focused on the research areas: Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity (RIA) and Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases (CVMD).
Within these project collaborations, the Biophysics team is responsible for identification and/or characterisation of hit, lead or candidate compounds, by studying ligand-protein interactions using a wide variety of biophysical techniques (NMR, SPR, ITC, DSC, DSF, TIRF).
We have a strong history of matrix working, predominantly with protein engineering, crystallography and high-throughput screening (all within DS), bioscience, and synthetic and computational chemistry (located in the iMeds).
The role
We are looking for a person who will work as a biophysicist in the drug discovery projects we support. The candidate will have broad understanding of biophysics, and can independently represent the discipline in the projects. This implies outlining the biophysics strategy at the start of the project, identifying opportunities for impact, developing the assays, collecting data, analysing data, and reporting back to the project team.
We expect the candidate to contribute to an interdisciplinary team deploying advanced technologies to investigate protein-ligand interactions, both in tailored studies with small numbers of compounds, and in high-throughput contexts. The ability to clearly communicate results and team working are absolute keys to success.
A particular element of this role is the application of Single-molecule Microscopy techniques (notably TIRF) in drug discovery. This entails a significant amount of highly innovative science and method development, and we believe this will require both perseverance and creativity.
The role is banded as Senior Research Scientist or Associate Principal Scientist. Final banding will reflect the candidate's experience.
