Do you want to join an excellent international team of computational chemists in developing the next generation of respiratory medicines?

We now seek to recruit a Senior Research Scientist responsible for Computational Chemistry in the Therapeutic Area Respiratory & Immunology (R&I). The position is placed at AstraZeneca's dynamic R&D site in Gothenburg, Sweden.

AstraZeneca is committed to the development of the next generation of innovative medicines for respiratory and immunology indications. The Computational Chemistry team leads efforts to expand the use of state of the art in silico methods - including machine learning - for modelling, ligand design, property predictions and data analysis. The team operates in a highly cross disciplinary environment in close collaboration with scientists in Medicinal Chemistry, Bioscience, DMPK and Pharmaceutical Sciences departments to advance the R&I project pipeline.

What you'll do
As a chemoinformatician in the Computational Chemistry group you will impact multiple projects across the R&I portfolio with a focus on developing and applying new machine learning algorithms to support target and disease area specific questions from hit identification to lead optimisation.
You will have a key role in modelling and analysis of small and large datasets in drug design. You will be an important contributor to project progression. The role holder will be part of a large chemoinformatics/machine learning community on site providing discipline based scientific insight and represent the department and AstraZeneca at interdisciplinary meetings and conferences, both internally and externally.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• The candidate will have a profound expertise in machine learning
• You will impact multiple discovery projects by efficiently and pro-actively applying a wide variety of machine learning approaches
• The work will include helping project teams analyze, interpret, and visualize chemical and biological data, and the communication of results within project teams and departments.
• You will be part of platform capability teams to identify and deliver global solutions for addressing key questions
• With excellent knowledge of modern computational chemistry/chemoinformatics the candidate will identify and drive areas of scientific improvements in the field
• The candidate will be expected to plan, write and publish high quality scientific papers

Education
We are seeking an engaged scientist with a PhD (or equivalent experience) in computational chemistry, chemistry, computer science, statistics or a related field with a strong computational background. A track record working in drug design projects is an advantage. Industry experience is a plus, but not a must. The candidate should aim at joining our fast-paced multidisciplinary R&I computational chemistry team; he/she is expected to have a high degree of independence and a robust expertise in machine learning techniques with programming skills to assist in the advancement of discovery programs.

Essential for the role
• Solid knowledge of applied machine learning and chemistry
• Expertise in using different machine learning techniques and software as well as knowledge in scientific computing, and programming skills (e.g. Python, Perl, C, C++, Java)
• Basic knowledge of medicinal chemistry is a plus
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
