Central to the success of the Respiratory & Inflammation Innovative Medicine Unit (R&I iMed) is the selection of drug targets that will provide valuable medicines for patients with inflammatory diseases. This is one of the main objectives of the R&I Translational Sciences Department in which we have an opening for a Senior Research Scientist in the Target Biology Section. Translational Sciences in AstraZeneca is a key link between pre-clinical and clinical drug discovery and makes use of extensive human samples for target selection and support of the progression of new medicines to clinical proof of concept.
Job Purpose
To design, develop and conduct experiments to support the selection and validation of drug targets for inflammatory diseases.
Accountabilities
These would include some or all of the below.
Be lab-based and to propose, design and conduct experiments to select and validate drug targets
Apply knowledge of pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology immunology or genetics, particularly using human data, to select and validate new drug targets.
Interpret experimental data and play a significant role in the planning of further experiments.
Identify and solve problems associated with their experiments.
Schedule agreed work-plans over agreed timelines such that the objectives of the team are met
Conduct where appropriate in parallel more than one agreed area of work to agreed timelines.
Maintain an awareness of current developments in the literature
Act as a Translational Representative in a project team and/or lead an early project
Act as a mentor, coach and role model for research scientists.
Achieve personal scientific visibility through project contributions, internal presentations and publications.
Contribute to writing abstracts/patents and peer-reviewed publications
Participate in the evaluation of external collaborations
Responsible for ensuring that their scientific knowledge influences project progression in accordance with portfolio priorities
Requirements and skills
Ideally should have a Ph.D in a relevant scientific discipline or a B.Sc/M.Sc. degree with relevant hands-on experience in cell/molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology or immunology
Post-doc experience in academia or in a pharmaceutical/biotech company would be advantageous
Skills in biochemical and/or molecular biology and assay development methods and/or
Experience in the handling and analysis of human cells, tissues or samples eg using immunohistological techniques
Ideally should have knowledge of Respiratory or Inflammatory diseases.....
