The Innovative Medicines (IMED) Biotech Unit of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases pushes the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicines to patients suffering from Heart Failure, Diabetes or Chronic Kidney Disease. To realize our ambitions we stay agnostic to molecular modality.

We drive our pipeline and the areas of scientific leadership to a large extent in collaborations with world experts which provides you as a scientist with the unique opportunity to access the most advanced knowledge and opportunities to stay at the fore-front of science.

The Medicinal Chemistry Department within the CVMD IMED is a critical player in the discovery and design of our drugs molecules and in identifying and validating novel biological targets. The capabilities span primarily around small molecules but includes peptides, oligonucleotides, molecular conjugates, etc. The department counts over 55 highly motivated and creative employees, incl. three at our satellite unit at the Max-Planck Institute in Dortmund, and constitutes a highly educated (>75% PhD's), experienced, science driven organization. Additional capacity is provided by external partners. A significant number of post-docs and students work with us in the labs to accelerate innovation in our key areas. The focus on scientific leadership is evident by a yearly high number of publications in high quality/impact journals, external presentations and individuals awarded the AZ scientist of the year both 2014 and 2015.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This is a senior scientific role on director level within the Medicinal Chemistry department. As an internationally acknowledged medicinal chemist and drug hunter you will devise, champion and develop the strategy of medicinal chemistry areas both in the department and in the AZ global community as well as be a strong influencer across disciplines and in our disease area strategy teams. You will have a profound impact on multiple projects across the CVMD IMED, in all phases from target selection to drug candidate selection. The role holder will provide scientific leadership and represent the department and AstraZeneca at interdisciplinary meetings internally and externally.

Key Deliverables:

• Provide strong influence across the portfolio to ensure state of the art approaches in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology to answer scientific hypotheses
• Together with the Medicinal Chemistry Leadership Team provide a clear, compelling scientific strategy in the field of medicinal chemistry
• Recommend, gain commitment to, initiate, lead and champion new innovations
• Generate and champion new project ideas and influence how novel biology can be detangled using chemical matter and techniques
• Evaluate and manage external collaborations & in-licensing opportunities
• Demonstrate scientific leadership through high quality publications, conference presentations and by building networks with key external experts and academic groups
• Show strong leadership capabilities in collaborative working, strategic thinking, leading through others and in the development of people and organization

Essential Requirements

You should have a PhD degree in a relevant scientific discipline with >10 year's post-doctoral research experience in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, preferentially with parts from an industrial setting. You will have the ability to operate effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix research environment, providing leadership and insight in drug discovery. You will have experience from and a good understanding of when to use various chemical modalities. You will be recognized internationally as evidenced by your external disclosures and publication record. This role also demands in-depth collaboration skills. Experience from leading projects or chemistry programs, including delivery of clinical candidates, is a must. Experience from design, set-up and read out of phenotypic screens including target deconvolution will be seen as an advantage as well as previous knowledge in the cardiovascular and metabolic disease area.
