The Material Technology team at ABB Research in Sweden is a highly skilled, experienced, and multi-disciplinary team and our aim is to develop sustainable concepts within the product segments of motors, switchgear, and energy storage systems (batteries, fuel cells). Our R&D topics include novel materials, surface science and engineering, advanced manufacturing solutions and energy storage devices.
In this position, you will report to the R&D Team Lead and you will perform research & technology development with a holistic approach considering materials, manufacturing, and design, to introduce innovative sustainable and circular solutions in our product/service offerings. Through your dedicated work, you will motivate continuous value addition, both for our customers and ABB.

Your responsibilities
Lead or be an individual contributor in projects related to applied material technology (metals or polymers) in ABB's product and service offerings.
Scout relevant material and/or manufacturing technologies and generate innovative ideas that promote sustainability and circularity.
Perform Life-cycle assessments (LCA) to support development of EPD/PEF documents and to assess the environmental impact of novel product designs and business models.
Challenge conventional systems/ideas and validate new product design concepts.
Perform experimental investigations and prototype tests in the laboratory.
Generate intellectual property and document project results by writing/delivering quality technical reports.
Collaborate with internal ABB stakeholders and external academic/industrial partners.

Your background
Minimum Master's degree in a material (metals or polymers) relevant science or engineering discipline with several years (> 7 years) of applied research and technology development experience, preferably with a few years in projects concerning material sustainability and/or eco-design of products.
Experience of material applications in electrical/mechanical products is an advantage.
Additional trainings on sustainability and/or circular economy and also knowledge and experience of environmental legislations and sustainability standards will be valued.
Practical experience of performing LCA, preferably using commercial tools and experience of generating EPDs for products is an advantage.
Skilled in communicating in English (discussion, presentation, and reporting).
As a person you have a strong team spirit, is ready to take own initiatives, be proactive and deliver high quality results with agility and within the stipulated deadlines.
Good collaboration capabilities in a technical team and laboratory environment.
