The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology at Sahlgrenska Academy conducts extensive research and teaching across major areas of knowledge from molecules to humans. The institute consists of five departments: pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry. The department of clinical neuroscience conducts clinical neuroscience research focused on the physiology and pathophysiology of various diseases of the nervous system and muscles.
Rehabilitation medicine is a dynamic and expansive field of knowledge, with clinical activities that are linked to the highly specialized care provided within the Neurology Department at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Rehabilitation medicine research at the unit has a strong clinical and multiprofessional profile. The research is focused on identifying factors that affect a person's ability to recover and improving rehabilitation medicine interventions for patients with various types of diseases of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, both in the acute phase and over time.
Subject area
Rehabilitation Medicine
Subject area description
Rehabilitation medicine has a background in social medicine and war medicine and aims to give people a meaningful life after illness or injury. It is one of four neurological specialties in Sweden and applies a biopsychosocial perspective. The research covers various conditions with injuries and diseases within the nervous system such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, late effects of polio and cerebral palsy. The same groups are relevant in healthcare. Depending on the research questions, quantitative methodology (including machine learning), qualitative methodology but also technical applications are used to investigate the body's function but also as a method for rehabilitation efforts. Intervention studies, longitudinal studies and the use of quality registers and other databases are part of the research areas.
Duties
The duties of the position include conducting research, supervising doctoral students and thesis students, and stimulating research among all staff categories within rehabilitation medicine. It is desirable that the holder of the position also participates in the existing research group in rehabilitation medicine, as the unit is the largest in Europe. The holder is welcome to have both a clinical and translational profile. Furthermore, it includes actively seeking external funding to contribute to a strong research environment in rehabilitation medicine research and developing research collaborations within and outside the department at a national and international level. Another important task is to support research staff in applying for and receiving research grants.
The teaching assignment that is part of the position is extensive and the job holder is expected to be responsible for teaching rehabilitation medicine within the medical program (just over 280 hours annually in semester 8 of the program), as well as a 3-credit course in the physiotherapy program each semester and a mandatory 7.5-credit course in rehabilitation medicine within the specialist program for nurses in neurological healthcare, as well as participating in teaching in other programs such as speech therapy and occupational therapy and physiotherapy.
The holder is also expected to perform tasks normally associated with a teaching position, such as academic management assignments, internal and external positions of trust, and to represent the subject nationally and internationally.
The clinical service will be adapted to the needs of the neurological health care.
