Senior Lecturer in Physiology with a focus on Gastrointestinal Physiology
Reference number PAR 2025/608
The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Department of Physiology, Sahlgrenska Academy, conducts research and teaching in physiology - the study of bodily functions. The department is now seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Physiology with a focus on Gastrointestinal Physiology.
Subject area
Physiology with a focus on Gastrointestinal Physiology
Subject area description
Physiology is the study of how different parts of our body interact and how individual organs regulate various processes. It focuses on the mechanisms - from molecules to organs and the entire living system - that work together to sustain life. Gastrointestinal physiology aims to study the gastrointestinal tract and its associated organs, which are central to nutrient absorption and serve as a protective barrier. Gastrointestinal diseases, particularly intestinal disorders, represent a major public health issue. Modern physiological research increasingly focuses on the role of subcellular components in organ function. To conduct successful research in this area, it is essential to combine cell physiological and molecular biology techniques with functional investigations, in order to bridge the gap between molecular mechanisms and organ function.
Duties
The position primarily involves research and teaching. Research responsibilities include conducting independent research in gastrointestinal physiology at a competitive international level, supervising doctoral students, and applying for external research funding.
The teaching duties mainly concern gastrointestinal/digestive physiology at the undergraduate level, but also extend to advanced-level courses and doctoral education, as well as examination within the broader field of physiology. Additional responsibilities include supervision and assessment of degree projects at various levels, as well as administrative tasks related to courses and departmental activities. Teaching is conducted in both Swedish and English.
Other duties associated with a senior lectureship, such as internal and external assignments of trust, may also be included. The position also involves collaboration with the surrounding society to disseminate knowledge and research findings.
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
To be eligible for appointment as a Senior Lecturer, the applicant must hold a completed doctoral degree in physiology or another medical science deemed equivalent by the employer in relation to the duties of the position. Demonstrated teaching proficiency is required, as is the ability to teach in both Swedish and English.
Assessment criteria
The assessment criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
Primary emphasis is placed on teaching proficiency and scientific proficiency, and these are weighted equally. Secondary emphasis is placed on administrative proficiency and the ability to collaborate, which are also weighted equally.
Teaching proficiency is assessed based on experience in teaching and supervision, the ability to convey knowledge, as well as engagement and interest in the subject. Proficiency must be well documented in a way that allows for assessment of the quality of the pedagogical work. Teaching experience within the subject across different student groups is considered a merit.
Scientific proficiency is primarily assessed based on the scope and quality of scientific publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals. Experience in supervising doctoral students and the ability to obtain external research funding are also considered merits.
Administrative proficiency is assessed based on documented experience in teaching administration (for example, course coordination). When assessing the ability to collaborate, emphasis is placed on experience in positions of trust within university administration or equivalent.
Employment
Permanent employment, full-time 100 %. The position is located at The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. First day of employment as agreed.
