The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 37 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Institute of Biomedicine has a broad and extensive involvement in both research and education. In both of these areas, our focus is with fundamental knowledge of the living cell -what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. Our extensive education assignment comprises teaching at the medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and laboratory technology programmes.

SPECIFIC SUBJECT DESCRIPTION: In genetic epidemiology genes that affect health and disease are studied, and how these genes are associated with biomarkers. Also, the interaction between genes and the genes interacting with the environment are studied. Furthermore, studies are performed of quantifying heritability in families as well as in populations using statistical methods.

JOB ASSIGNMENTS: The successful candidate is expected to perform both research and teaching. The research should primarily be performed in cooperation with groups involved in applied genetics research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, and also in method development related to these. The successful applicant will also supervise PhD students, who in their theses work perform significant elements of genetics, as well as organize and participate in courses at postgraduate and PhD level. It also includes the development of joint statistics education at the University of Gothenburg / Chalmers and the Sahlgrenska Academy. The holder is also expected to be a support for statisticians at the CF unit Bioinformatics and for other relevant units at Sahlgrenska Academy, including both research and clinical development.

ELIGIBILITY: The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Phd degree in mathematical statistics and demonstrated pedagogic skills.

ASSESSMENT: Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Primarily scientific skills and secondarily pedagogical and administrative skills. In the assessment of scientific skills great emphasis will be placed on expert knowledge of mathematical statistics (requirement to hold a doctorate in the subject). A broad scientific cooperation with preclinical and clinical research groups within the Sahlgrenska Academy is beneficial and proven ability to execute such cooperation in the form of publications is advantageous in the evaluation. The successful applicant may also be asked to complete an educational training program within the first year of employment.
