Subject area:
Food selection by large free-ranging herbivores shapes the distribution of both plants and animals across natural and production ecosystems. To effectively manage these systems requires an understanding of how interactions between plants and herbivores influence natural resources and vice versa. In Sweden, the consequence of such interactions is of high societal interest. The Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre therefore announces a Senior Lecturer position in forest ecology focusing on plant-herbivore interactions. The complexity of the southern Swedish situation requires a breadth of expertise, as the region supports multiple mammalian herbivore species, high human population densities, extensive production forests and substantial browsing-related concerns. We are searching for an outstanding candidate with a demonstrated ability to work with these issues across the contexts of silviculture, biodiversity conservation, nutritional ecology, veterinary science and the social sciences. The successful candidate will combine cutting edge science with excellent abilities to disseminate results to stakeholders.
Duties:
We expect the successful candidate to actively develop the research field at the department in the future and be in frequent dialogue with stakeholders. The candidate should define and develop her/his own research direction, and carry out interdisciplinary work with existing research groups at the department and with other departments, universities, governmental organizations, and the forest industry. The candidate will teach at advanced level within her/his research field and play an active role in course development at the department. The position includes the supervision of MSc and PhD students.
Qualifications:
The applicant shall:
• have obtained the degree of PhD in biology, ecology, forest management or the equivalent
• have strong academic skills within the subject area of the position,
• have teaching proficiency and completed training in teaching in higher education corresponding to a minimum 10 weeks of studies, or have acquired the corresponding skills in some other way
Assessment criteria:
Assessment for the appointment will be based on the degree to which the candidate possesses the skills to qualify for the position. It is desirable that the applicant has competence as Docent (Associate Professor).
The assessment of scientific skills will take into account:
• completed and ongoing research
• the ability to independently initiate and conduct innovative research
• the ability to conduct research together with experts from other subject areas
• skills in raising research funds
• post-doc experience from an academic research environments outside of SLU, or a PhD degree from another university
The assessment of pedagogic skills will take into account:
• the ability to integrate pedagogy and science, where the experience with pedagogy may include education of stakeholders as well as the teaching of students
• experience in planning, carrying out and evaluating teaching activities
• experience in supervisions and examination on Master and PhD level
The assessment also take into account skills in:
• communication in Swedish or other Scandinavian language as well as in English
• collaborating with stakeholders in society
• effective dissemination of research findings to stakeholders
