About the Team
The Data & Platforms domain at Storytel enables the entire business to be more productive, innovative, and make informed choices based on strong data. We're split into three main areas; Infrastructure, Developer Services, and Data & Machine Learning.
We are investing more into Data & Machine Learning when it comes to discovery, prediction, business modeling, and of course analytics. We promote transparency and facilitation of information flow.
In order to further invest in and evolve Data & Machine Learning, we're looking for someone that will join us in the Data & Platforms management group. We will lead and evolve this incredibly important area to support the growth of a premiere experience product in the forefront of storytelling!
About the Role
As a senior engineering manager leading Data and Machine Learning you'll enable multiple teams to deliver on their ambitious goals, and meet both internal innovation and experimentation demands, as well as our product strategy. You'll have the opportunity to both lead teams directly, as well as grow, coach, and lead leaders that lead teams of their own. You will have a high level of autonomy and responsibility
As we mature our Data and Machine Learning capabilities to ensure we can reach our goals and ambitions of being the leading global audiobook service, we seek experience of similar journeys from before; e.g. having walked the path of scaling up and maturing Data & ML is highly sought after.
The main areas you will be working with are:
• Machine learning products for our end users (such as recommender systems, NLP analysis, and more)
• MLOPS, Data Engineering, and architecture
• Business Analytics/Intelligence
Your main responsibility is to create an environment/system where every team in your area can excel; on the team level but also on, domain, and org level. You will ensure there is a high level of teamwork, transparency, and efficiency in collaboration within the team and with other teams.
• Grow, coach, challenge and lead talents both directly, and through leaders reporting to you.
• Ensure that ambitious goals are set and met within all teams of your area.
• In close collaboration with the domain's other teams, drive the domain's goal-setting process and pave the way for the domain as a whole to reach our goals.
• Work with and contribute to the rest of the senior engineering management group on our policies and long-term goals.
• Be accountable for technical delivery and work with your area on strategy and execution.
• Ensure that there is a strong culture of innovation and experimentation.
• Responsible for operational excellence; in how we run reliable and scalable services and the process resulting in these services being delivered.
• Advocate and advance effective machine learning, data science, and intelligence practices and help develop and evangelize great engineering, process, and organizational practices
• Growing new leaders; both within the IC and management track. Develop people through coaching and mentoring. Conduct regular 1:1s, goal setting, and feedback conversations with talents and leaders to ensure their well-being and team health, and support them in their growth.
• Recruit great talents within all disciplines of your area.
About you:
You are action-oriented and enjoy continuously working on improvement within the team. You are someone who anticipates and addresses issues with communication, performance, interpersonal dynamics, and unclear ownership. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about building great products that people love, and always makes technology choices with this end goal in mind.
To be successful in this role we believe that you:
• Have experience in running highly effective teams within machine learning or data science.
• Have experience in leading through change in a safe and productive way.
• Have led many large-scale initiatives and projects to delivery across a mature Machine Learning/ Data organization.
• Are strategic and visionary, not afraid to push the envelope, and questions the status quo.
• Are technical but prefers leaning on leadership and facilitation skills to drive technical decision-making. You put people and team first, and understand how that is the foundation for everything we do.
• Have experience in working with distributed and remote teams.
• Have good communication skills.
• Believe in innovation and experimentation.
