The University has 40 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
The scanning probe microscopy (SPM) laboratory at MAX IV was established in 2015 to support scientific projects performed at a variety of MAX IV beamlines with additional sample surface characterization by means of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), with a potential for developing more surface characterization techniques in the future.
The STM setup operational now at MAX IV is featuring a VT XA STM from Omicron Nanotechnology GmbH, which is planned to be upgraded soon with AFM capabilities. The reliable interface between the (offline) SPM laboratory and different beamlines remains to be established via developing different sample transfer facilities and vacuum suitcases.
Tasks
The tasks will include (but will not be restricted to) the following:
- Taking full responsibility for the smooth, productive and safe operation of the SPM lab.
- Advertising and promoting the lab in user communities; constantly attracting new users and projects.
- Developing and running an own research program based on the use of the SPM laboratory instruments in combination with synchrotron radiation (SR)-based techniques.
- Providing technical support for all existing, soon-coming and future equipment in the SPM lab, including vacuum sub-systems, motion and manipulation, scanners, detectors, electronics and relevant software.
- Initiating the development of and searching funding for new instruments and upgrade of existing equipment, realization of these developments from the design stage to the final testing. Testing and commissionning of all purchased and home-built equipment, enabling user operation of all planned instruments.
- Creating and supporting a reliable interface between beamlines and the SPM lab by enabling convenient (in-vacuum) sample transfer between these facilities.
- Providing regular user support to all groups working with the equipment in the SPM lab as well as participating in the work of SR beamlines closely connected to the facility (e.g. FlexPES, MaxPEEM). During the first months of employment strong involvement in the commissioning work of the above mentioned beamlines is expected.
Qualifications
- The candidate must hold a PhD in physics, solid state chemistry, or similar
- Proven considerable experience (at least 3 years) in the use and maintenance of STM/AFM/LEED instruments; scientific record demonstrating profound knowledge of these techniques and their use in resolving complex scientific problems.
- Proven considerable experience (at least 3 years) in the use and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum equipment and developing complicated scientific instrumentation.
- Proven experience (at least 3 years) in XPS, NEXAFS and ARPES techniques with synchrotron radiation is essential. Experience in other SR-based techniques is a strong plus.
- Proven record of initiating, running and completing instrument development projects relevant for synchrotron radiation beamlines or scanning probe microscopy setups.
- Proven knowledge of and ability to develop hardware control systems as well as good knowledge of Python scripting.
- Proven record of successful user support at a complicated scientific facility (e.g. synchrotron radiation source or an SPM lab).
- Considerable management and communication skills for shaping, supporting and extending user community of the SPM lab, ability to present and promote the lab at scientific conferences and to establish collaborations with potential/new users.
- Own research interests / projects involving any of the relevant methods (STM/AFM and their combination with synchrotron-based techniques) and a presence of strong scientific collaborations with other research groups or institutions.
- Ability to work in a team, good communication skills, and a good command of English are essencial.
