The University has 40 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
MAX IV is a national large-scale research laboratory providing scientists from Sweden and the rest of the world with instruments for research in areas such as materials science, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually. 200 people are currently employed at the MAX IV Laboratory.
Tasks
Biopsies from placentas will initially be taken by our collaborator.
The main interest in these samples is mapping the trace metals (both essential and toxic) with micro/nano X-ray Fluorescence (XRF). The subsequent methods and chemicals needed for (long term) storage, preparation and slicing for soft/hard X-ray fluorescence (XRF) experiments is a task for this scientist position. Gathering wider expertise concerning different approaches, and reporting these findings back to the beamline staff is included, as well as feedback to our collaborator regarding the number/location of the biopsies in the placenta.
Other tasks include test beamtime at Balder and NanoMAX, as well as beamtime at soft/hard XRF beamlines equivalent to those and SoftiMAX will be sought. The scientist will be a team member in these experiments. Data analysis, quantification and interpretation will be shared between the sceintist and the beamline staff of Balder, SoftiMAX and NanoMAX.
Qualifications
The successful candidate has the following qualifications:
• PhD in a Life Science research area (biology, medicine,..) with experience of handling/preparing tissue samples and interpretation of histological experiments.
• (Some) experience in synchrotronrelated techniques is highly beneficial; preferentially X-ray fluorescence or imaging, together with general knowledge of the operational principles of synchrotrons/beamlines.
• Experience with data analysis of Life Science samples eg; statistics, background and noise reduction, filtering, combining histology and spectroscopic techniques, etc.
• Good communication in English, ability to work independently and good project management skills are a merit.
This is a 6 months employment with starting date October 1.
On call services may apply in the future.
