Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder affecting 10-15 % of the population in the western world. The cause of IBS is unknown but evidence is accumulating that the patients may have a dysregulated mucosal inflammatory reaction due to alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota.
Job assignments
In the proposed project we aim to demonstrate how gut microbiota composition is related to alterations of the gut immune system. Moreover, the project aims to determine how an imbalance in these factors is linked to symptom generation in patients with IBS. The project involves many lab-based techniques such as 16S sequencing of gut microbiota, isolation and culture of human cells and gut microbiota, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and PCR. Large and complex data sets will be generated which will be handled by bioinformatics tools.
Qualifications
The applicant must have a doctoral degree in the appropriate field. Previous experience of research within the area of pathophysiology of IBS is advantageous. Substantial experience of 16S sequencing of gut microbiota, isolation and culture of human cells and flow cytometry is mandatory. Experience of handling large and complex data sets bioinformatics tools, such as R, is a requisite. Previous demonstrated capability of working independently is highly meriting.
