IPEN (International Pollutants Elimination Network), is a global network of public interest NGOs working together for a toxics-free future for all. We work for a world in which toxic chemicals are no longer produced or used in ways that harm human health and the environment. IPEN elevates local knowledge into global United Nations policy arenas, in order to bring about change in developing and transition countries.
Does it sound interesting? Then please read on, because right now we are looking to expand our team with a dedicated Science & Technical Advisor based in Gothenburg, Sweden.
As a Science & Technical Advisor at IPEN, you will have broad responsibility in the subject matters covered by our programs, focusing on reducing exposure to and harm from hazardous chemicals and waste. This position will focus on the Stockholm and Basel Conventions, as well as emerging policy work on plastics, ocean/marine fisheries, and health.
For example, you will:
• Maintain a big picture overview, including monitoring the latest scientific information of the subject matter covered by the program.
• Contribute to annual planning and maintain a big picture overview for IPEN's program areas.
• Provide science and policy support and give trainings to IPEN member organizations to understand scientific data in the local context and support their capacity building.
• Attend and serve as IPEN's advisor and representative at international meetings and conferences.
• Conduct scientific research and data analysis based on raw data generated among IPEN members across the globe and develop policy recommendations.
• Design strategies to elevate scientific data, such as studies of exposure to hazardous chemicals, science-based reports and policy efforts relevant to the program areas.
• Supervise and support project implementation and reporting in accordance with donor requirements.
We are a small secretariat with staff based in various locations all over the world. You will be based in the IPEN office in Gothenburg (Sweden) and collaborate with IPEN team members based in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Australia and North America. Digital collaboration and virtual teams are no news to us. Since we are spread around the globe, we need to be able to travel (post pandemic) extensively and work outside of regular office hours due to members in various time zones.
To perform in our context, we believe that you:
• Hold a higher academic degree within natural sciences that has given you a good understanding of chemistry and/or toxicology and scientific writing.
• Have had a scientific focus in previous professional roles.
• Have experience in managing and successfully implementing projects or campaigns.
• Have experience from global contexts, international projects and/or working in developing and/or transition countries.
• Have excellent ability to speak, read and write in English, including technical documents
It is also considered a merit if you have experiences from international policy work in a relevant field, or experience of working in a civil society organization. If you speak other UN languages at a proficient level, it will be of great use at IPEN.
These are our square technical requirements, but since we are a small team and a mission-driven organization, we also emphasize personality and motivation in this recruitment process. You probably identify yourself as someone who is keen to move science into policy, as a team player, and a strategic-minded person with leadership skills and the ability to plan and prioritize in order to execute your visions. You like challenges, are flexible enough to deal with global dynamics and are a fast learner. You enjoy networking, as well as being on stage.
If you want to apply for this position, please send your resume and cover letter in English to recruitment@ipen.org no later than April 4th. In this recruitment process we are cooperating with the Swedish-based consultancy firm Recreatio and your personal data will be handled in accordance with the GDPR legislation. Questions on the position or about IPEN will be answered by Johan Norrfjärd, johan@recreatio.se, tel: +46 70 20 40 113.
The position is a full-time position and requires the candidate to hold work and residence permits in Sweden. Applicable Swedish union agreements apply.
