Respiratory is one of AstraZeneca's main therapy areas. Our aim is to transform asthma and COPD treatment through inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The RIA Target & Translational Sciences (TTS) department is an agile environment, with a culture that is science and patient-focused. Our mission is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level, identify the most effective target and the right patient population, and close the gap between bench science and bedside clinical practice.

A key role of Respiratory Target Science Lead (TSL) is to lead the identification and development of new innovative respiratory disease drug targets to a successful investment decision at TSID. Underpinned by a robust understanding of disease relevant pathways and drivers, the TSL will work collaboratively with all members of IMED RIA to develop ideas for new targets into a package of data that results in a positive TSID. This package will include the integration of complex data sets including in vitro human cell/tissue, expression analysis, cell based data, bioinformatics, genomics and in vivo data that will be obtained through matrix working with other functions, including Discovery Sciences, PMG, ECD etc.

Accountabilities and responsibilities:

* Leads the identification and development of new innovative respiratory disease drug targets
* Works with Target champions from outside Target Science to develop their ideas into a TSID package
* Delivers successful investment decisions at TSID
* Leads generation of a compelling data package aligned to 5Rs
* Ensures an early precision medicine strategy is proposed addressing Right Patient needs
* Identifies early human validation evidence from clinical back translation, genomics of target/pathway etc.
* Identifies opportunity within patient treatment paradigm, including inhaled vs. oral
* Calls out gaps, areas of concern and future validation needs
* Forms strong connections with other parts of the organisation required to employ technologies and methodologies to support target identification, early validation and other Pre-TSID package building activities, including Bioscience, Discovery Sciences
* Work across the TTS matrix to deliver superior target propositions, including Data Science to mine internal/external databases, Clinical Disease Knowledge for clinical back translational etc
* Internal scientific expert for respiratory drug targets and recognised by, influences and utilises the external scientific community
* Deepens the mechanistic understanding of putative targets and its link to patients, disease and clinical outcome.
* Will effectively communicate results, plans, and strategies via scientific reports, regulatory documents, oral and written methods of communication.
* Will use judgment and knowledge where appropriate to influence the work of projects, teams, section and departments.
* Will maintain an awareness of current developments in the literature and identify leading advances in target science that can be successfully applied to advance IMED RIA portfolio
* Will be an effective team member in supporting projects to meet their objectives striving for continuous improving processes by identifying, championing, and/or contributing to the development of solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness
* Coaching less experienced scientists to develop their skills and maximize their potential.
* Will contribute to publishing papers in internationally recognised journals and will present work internally and externally
* Will participate in and contribute to local discipline review groups

Essential Requirements

* PhD or equivalent with a strong experimental drive and background in basic science related to respiratory research.
* Post-doc experience or otherwise relevant scientific research experience.
* Experience in pharmaceutical R&D.
* Strong publication record.
* Demonstrable delivery in target identification and target validation
* Excellent understanding of the Respiratory therapy area and disease biology, including cell types, molecular pathways and mechanisms related to respiratory diseases
* Knowledge of the biological basis for patient segmentation and precision medicine
* Broad understanding of relevant target validation technologies and methodologies along with excellent scientific laboratory skills and ability to experimentally address key scientific questions.
* Excellent skills in hypothesis forming and testing, able to draw conclusions and suggest next steps based on the experimental data.
* A good understanding of the drug development process, from lead identification through clinical development
* Ability to work productively in a matrix team environment and excellent collaborative skills
* Excellent written and oral communicational skills
* Good networking and communication skills and a strong delivery focus
