SIPRI's Peace and Development Cluster is hiring a Researcher to join the Food, Peace and Security programme.

Context
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an independent international institute whose core mission is to undertake research and activities on security, conflict and peace. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI provides excellent opportunities for scientific and personal development. SIPRI is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages women and non-European candidates to apply.

The Researcher position
SIPRI's Food, Peace and Security programme conducts research on the intersection between food security, conflict and peace. Our programme research also addresses related issues, including gender, climate change, and the measurement of impact. We also examine the role of humanitarian, development and peacebuilding action in relation to food security, including specific aid modalities, such as cash-based transfers, and how the impact of aid interventions on generating peace can be measured.

The Food, Peace and Security team is seeking to recruit a researcher. We are open minded as to whether the position is occupied by a researcher or senior researcher - it is the profile and background that counts.

The purpose of the position is to advance research and knowledge on food security and issues related to peacebuilding.

Tasks and responsibilities
The Researcher in Food, Peace and Security will, as directed by the Director of the Food, Peace and Security programme:

• Conduct high quality research;
• Advance the collective research agenda of the Food, Peace and Security Programme
• Communicate research findings through research papers, reports, policy briefs, conferences, and other outlets;
• Fundraise or contribute to funding proposals of the Food, Peace and Security Programme and the Peace and Development cluster;
• Mentor junior staff (and, if applicable, manage research assistants and interns)
• Contribute to a pleasant and stimulating intellectual and work environment in the institute
• Collaborate with others, including on research, fundraising and outreach.

Requirements
The Researcher should have a solid research background in food systems and security, and preferably also from a peace and conflict perspective. The post holder will have strong analytic, methodological and communication skills. A proven track-record of strategy development and fundraising would also be an advantage. The position holder has to be productive and cooperative and enjoy both solo work and team work. All SIPRI staff are expected to have a commitment to SIPRI's values and mission, and to contribute to the life of the institute.

More specifically, SIPRI expects,

• A university degree or degrees, in disciplines and topics relevant to this post, at Doctoral level, or Masters with publications to Doctoral degree standard;
• 2-7 years (depending on the applicant's seniority) of participation in research and writing;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• Proven ability to work and deliver in small teams;
• Ease of working in oral and written English, with further language proficiency a useful advantage.

Contract period
The contract period will initially last for two years with the possibility of extension. The post is full-time. The post requires that the candidate becomes a resident in Stockholm, Sweden, when employment starts. The salary package will be negotiated individually.

How to apply
Interested candidates should submit:

• A one-page cover letter in English detailing your qualifications and specifying why you are applying for this position;
• A CV in English including your degrees, work experience, publications, language skills and contact details for two referees;
• One single-authored writing sample in English (articles, book chapters or substantial pieces of writing up to 10 000 words).

In order to be considered in the recruitment process, the application must be made via the form in the vacancies section of SIPRI's website and not through any other external job sites.

Please observe that you must apply via SIPRI's electronic application system.

Please access the form via the 'apply' button at the end of this page.

The closing date for applications is 10 April 2023 (CET).

Interviews are expected to take place in late April.

For enquiries regarding the position, please contact: Dr Caroline Delgado, Director of the Food, Peace and Security programme, Senior Researcher.

SIPRI is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to achieving workforce diversity in terms of gender, nationality and culture.
