Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.A technically skilled and well-organized researcher with knowledge and interest in intestinal cell biology is needed in Malin Johansson's research group. In this position you will contribute to the work in the research group in general, be responsible for specific methods, and pursue own projects. The research is focused on increasing the knowledge in how the intestine is protected with a special focus on understanding the structure and function of the mucus layer that protects the mucosa and the various cells that produce it, an as yet largely unexplored research field. A malfunctioning mucus protection is associated with intestinal inflammation especially to patients suffering from ulcerative colitis. Increasing our understanding lead to future development of more effective treatments for these patients as well as promote general health.
The research is conducted within the environment of the Mucin Biology research groups at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Department of Biomedicine, Division of Medical Chemistry and Cell Biology. This environment is world leading in its field of research. The environment provides great opportunities to develop where many different model systems are used and with a wide range of methods available.
Duties
The work is varied and includes several different analyses and model systems. Model systems used are various genetically modified mice, human biopsies, organoids, and cells in culture. Methods crucial for the projects are various microbiology methods, as anaerobic cultures and detection of specific microorganisms of the gut microbiota based on genetics, ex vivo analyses of intestinal tissue focusing on mucus and goblet cells, combined with in situ hybridization and immunostainings. These methods will be performed with advanced high-resolution microscopy in time series. The projects will in addition utilize many different methods in the fields of cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry. The work will involve implementing new methods and you will handle samples in clinical settings. You are expected to collaborate within the research group and the organization. You should also participate in the scientific work and the organization where tasks, such as purchasing, organization of the laboratory, to document research, project planning, keeping updated with the research literature, and scientific writing are included.
Qualifications
We are looking for someone with a PhD in, and preferably with more experience of research in intestinal protection mechanisms with a focus on cell biology and microbiology, who wants to expand their knowledge in the field. You should be technically skilled and have knowledge and experience of working with the important methods as super-resolution microscopy of live explant tissue and organoids. Knowledge in using advanced image analysis of dynamic cell biology details over time is important and previous experience to study secretory processes, especially mucus secretion, is preferred. You are also required to have documented skills and experience of working with animals and live tissue. Experience in microbiology focusing on the gut microbiota with cultivation and specific detection is needed. It is useful to have experience of working with clinical samples within clinical studies with clinically active personnel. The applicant should also have basic knowledge in and experience of methods as cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Great emphasis is placed on being well organized, having good collaborative skills and ability to work independently. To be highly proficient in written and spoken English is a requirement as the research environment is international with many international collaborations and the work includes writing scientific texts, such as articles and smaller grant applications.
Employment
The position is full-time and permanent with placement at the Department of Biomedicine. Probationary employment may be applied. Starting date by agreement.
