The vision of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is to understand, explain and improve the world and the society we live in from a health and life-science perspective. Work at the faculty is guided by Linnaeus University's four core values: innovation, curiosity, proximity and benefit.

The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.

The marine microbiology research group seeks a researcher for studies of population dynamics in marine bacteria.

Project title: Seasonal succession in Baltic Sea bacterioplankton.

The research project: Marine bacteria play a central role in driving global biogeochemical cycles of elements essential to life (e.g. carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous), but detailed knowledge of the factors that determine the success of specific bacterial populations is lacking. The main goal of this project is to investigate the seasonal succession of particle-attached compared to free-living bacteria in the Baltic Sea. Work consists of processing samples and analyzing data collected during 4 years at the Linnaeus Microbial Observatory, in the Baltic Sea proper off the island of Öland. Analysis approaches include next-generation tag sequencing methodologies, phylogenetic analysis and statistics.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree in ecology or microbial ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, or similar. Applicants should have extensive expertise in performing bioinformatics analyses on next-generation 16S rRNA gene sequence data, and interpreting data on environmental factors in relation to bacterial population dynamics.

Type of Employment: Part time position, 20%. Temporary position, for 6 months. The starting point for the position is August 1st 2015.

Placement city: Kalmar, Sweden
