We are looking for a dedicated and knowledgeable researcher to join the unit for Marine conservation and spatial planning at the Institute for Coastal Research, to help us develop and communicate new knowledge to support the long-term sustainable use of the sea, with a focus on questions related to marine protected areas
About the position
You will primarily work on developing and applying video-based methods for monitoring fish in protected areas and increasing knowledge about ecosystem function. The work includes method development for AI-supported analyses of video data, application of the methods within research projects, and contributions to reports and scientific articles. The work is conducted in collaboration with a broad team, but you are expected to take the lead in the technical development work. You will also contribute to general tasks that support the unit for area protection and marine spatial planning, as well as operations at SLU Aqua.
Your profile
You have documented expertise in marine ecology and computer vision and machine learning methods for video-based fish monitoring. You have excellent IT skills and experience in handling large datasets in R. You can lead technical development work, are good at working in teams, and express yourself fluently in spoken and written English. Experience in research related to marine protected areas is an advantage, as is good species identification skills and experience working with fish and crustaceans in the North Atlantic. Scientific publication on fish identification and counting in underwater video is a significant asset.

The Department of Aquatic Resources is one of SLU's largest and has more than 200 employees at four main locations: Uppsala (Ultuna), Lysekil, Stockholm (Drottningholm) and Öregrund, as well as at field stations.
