at the Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry. Closing date: 7 June 2017.

The Department of Materials- and Environmental Chemistry (MMK) is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Natural Sciences with about 140 employees. The research activities of MMK are in the areas of Materials and Solid-State Chemistry, focusing on different classes of materials; e.g. intermetallics and alloys, ceramics and glasses, self-assembled and porous materials, and soft matter. The work stretches from synthesis, over advanced characterisation methods like X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and NMR studies to modelling with computer simulations. Materials application together with environmental aspects/considerations are an important part of the research activities.

Project description
The position will be associated with the VR project Novel inorganic open framework structures enabled by ionic liquids/Nya oorganiska öppna nätverksstrukturer möjliggjorda genom syntes i jonvätskor.

This project will investigate the synthesis, structure analysis and property determination of new transition metal containing open framework structures. The worldwide consumption of natural and synthetic open framework materials for application in catalysis, adsorption and separation is about 5 million metric tons per year. This market share could be substantially expanded if materials with new network architectures and larger pore sizes could become available, even new applications could be envisioned. To satisfy this need, task-specific ionic liquids (ILs) will be explored as smart reaction media in the synthesis of boro-, alumo- and gallophosphates, a compound class that features inorganic open framework structures, but is largely underexplored. Using ILs in their synthesis as the reaction medium, templating agent, mineralizer, and the framework precursor will allow controlling the key structural features like cavity size and shape as well as composition and acidity and ultimately lead to new inorganic framework materials with unprecedented structure and functionality.

Main responsibilities
The position involves research in the field of inorganic and physical materials chemistry. The research activities will focus on the synthetic exploration, developing and optimizing the synthesis conditions along with structure characterization using X-ray, synchrotron and electron diffraction techniques.

Qualification requirements
Researchers are appointed primarily for purposes of research and must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria
In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills. The successful candidate must have experience in synthetic inorganic solid state chemistry, in the use of ionic liquids for materials synthesis and structure analysis of ionic liquids using X-ray diffraction. In addition, the candidate needs to have a background in computational chemistry, specifically in calculating the electronic structure of extended solids by DFT methods. The candidate must document the experience through publication in renown, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Terms of employment
The position involves full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of extension. Start date 2017-09-15 or as per agreement.
