Where knowledge grows.
We are an international university in Småland, Sweden. Together we set knowledge in motion for a sustainable societal development.
The Department of Chemistry and Biomedical Sciences is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and food science.
Research area: Food science
Location until further notice: Kalmar
Terms of employment: 100 %, employed until further notice
The research focuses on studies on the quality of foods and on product development, by analysis and characterization of the nutritional and technological quality of raw materials and foods. Systematic studies of the influence of food processing on the properties of food strive to develop healthy and sustainable foods and ingredients.
Another focus is research on nutrient bioavailability, metabolism and diet-health associations; i.e. in vitro and in vivo models are used to determine the bioavailability and bioactivity of the vitamin folate. The effects of synthetic folic acid versus natural food folate on one-carbon metabolism are investigated using metabolomics-based techniques. Also, with respect to further micronutrients and bioactive components, the metabolic effects of foods and diets are studied.
Duties
The appointee is expected to contribute to current and future research activities. In collaboration with colleagues, he or she will be required to establish and validate methodology for quantification of folate, methyl donors, other micronutrients and bioactive compounds in food and clinical samples using e.g. HPLC and LCMS. The appointee is also expected to support studies on food processing, clinical trials with human volunteers, and metabolomics-based investigations of human one-carbon metabolism. To a minor extent, the appointee should participate in the supervision of PhD, bachelor and master degree projects.
Qualification requirements
Eligibility requirements for the position include a doctoral degree in Food Science or equivalent scientific competence.
The appointee should have documented research experience in food chemistry, food technology, nutritional science and metabolomics. We are particularly seeking a candidate with documented expertise in folate analysis, food processing, human intervention studies and NMR metabolomics. Assessment will be based on the quality and scope of the above-mentioned skills.
Experience of classroom teaching at BSc and MSc level in the field of food science and food chemistry is required.
Furthermore, very good knowledge of written and spoken English is required.
Since the research is carried out within a team, ability to collaborate is important.
Other assessment criteria
Documented ability to establish research activities, including obtaining funding for research will also be part of the assessment. Experience in collaborative projects, both with national and international research institutions and stakeholders is a merit.
