The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

Project description
The work is part of the research within SWEMARC and of the EMFF funded project, "Circular Marine IMTA", which focuses on developing new sustainable aquaculture technologies along the Swedish west coast. Both SWEMARC and The CIRCULAR project are led by Professor Kristina Sundell. The research focus of CIRCULAR is the production of nutritious food through integrated multitrophic, co-culturing in aquaculture (IMTA) for the development of sustainable aquaculture systems. An important part of this research is the development of new sustainable systems for the cultivation of sea cucumbers, a research that requires special competence and experience in sea cucumber biology.

The purpose of the employment is to develop a cultivation protocol for red sea cucumber, Parastichopus tremulus, and to investigate whether it is possible to use the species as a benthic (detrivor) part in an integrated cultivation system (IMTA). CIRCULAR is a collaborative project between SWEMARC, BioEnv and the Department of Marine Sciences and two private companies: Scanfjord AB, Mollösund and Akvafuture A / S, Brønnøysund.

The work is also part of the scientific diving work at the Kristineberg station supporting researchers with material and/or diving competence as well as documentation of underwater scenarios. The diving organization at Kristineberg is also involved in the education and training of scientific divers and dive leaders in collaboration with Yrgo dive school, professional education by the city of Göteborg.

Job assignments
The employment within SWEMARC and the CIRCULAR project includes being responsible for the sea cucumbers that the project has at Kristineberg and developing breeding protocols for these animals, ie. management of brood stock, induction of spawning, fertilization, management of the larval stages and live feed for them, laboratory and field experiments on juveniles in growth stages using organic material (detritus) produced in other parts of the IMTA system, stress physiology of sea cucumbers. The position covers all aspects of aquaculture biology research, including routine aspects of animal husbandry, experimental design and practical practice, sampling and analysis, statistical analyzes, compilation of results and writing articles for scientific journals.

The applicant is expected to be independent and able to take own initiatives within the framework of the project. The applicant will work in a dynamic research group where support is available when needed, but the applicant is also expected to take responsibility for this part of the project, so that the schedule is followed. The applicant is expected to present the results at conferences, seminars, project meetings and in reports.

As a member of SWEMARC, the applicant is expected to participate in the Center's activities and to communicate and collaborate with other members of SWEMARC and national and international colleagues.

The employment within the diving activities includes assisting researchers in diving, sample collection and under water documentation as well as be the person responsible for the maintenance of the diving equipment at the station, making sure that it is regularly sent in for service and kept updated regarding safety. The position also involves giving courses in scientific diving methods and for achieving professional diving competence.

The employment
This is a fixed-term employment for 18 months, 50%, starting May 1st or upon agreement.
