A position as researcher in Environmental Physics/Biogeophysics is available at the Department of Soil and Environment within the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala. The Department of Soil and Environment pursues research, education and environmental assessment work related to soil and its sustainable use. Environmental physics/Biogeophysics falls within the department's research on soil physics, which is a central topic for the department with many active employees.
Soil structure controls many important soil functions and processes, e.g. soil aeration, water transport and solute transport, processes that have a large influence on crop growth. Soil structure changes with time due to soil management and natural processes.
Tasks: The overall objective of the project in which the researcher will be involved is to generate new experimental data on soil surface sealing and consolidation after harrowing. The data will be used to develop and parameterize an empirical model, which accounts for these temporal changes in soil structure and their effects on water flow and solute transport. The work includes soil sampling, controlled irrigation laboratory experiments, X-ray tomography and image analysis. The successful applicant will actively develop the project and design the experiments.
Qualifications: We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a PhD in soil science, agricultural sciences or similar. Previous experience in X-ray tomography and image analysis is required. The applicant should have a documented capability to carry out independent research and in writing scientific publications in English. The working language is English and good skills in English (both written and oral) are required. Previous experience in studying temporal changes in soil structure is desirable.
Place of work: Uppsala, Sweden.
