Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
We are seeking an analytical chemist with expertise in high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to develop and apply early warning system tools for identifying emerging hazardous chemicals in water and related environmental matrices.
About the position
The main objective is to design and implement suspect and non-target screening workflows using LC-HRMS/MS to detect, prioritize, and characterize previously unrecognized contaminants. This includes developing data-driven strategies that combine HRMS data with cheminformatics and statistical tools to identify compounds of environmental and health concern. Key tasks include sample preparation, extraction, and HRMS analysis, as well as processing large datasets involving feature detection, annotation, structural elucidation, and trend analysis. The candidate will apply and further develop computational workflows (e.g., R) for compound identification in complex matrices, with emphasis on R-based data evaluation and visualization. The position also involves responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and development of LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS instrumentation, including method validation, troubleshooting, and ensuring high data quality. Support for method development and training of other users is included.

The successful candidate will contribute to scientific publications, participate in research initiatives (e.g., PARC), build collaborations, and support new project development. The role includes working in interdisciplinary teams, contributing to analytical infrastructure, and participating in teaching and student supervision.

Your profile
Applicants must hold a PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field. Applicants with extensive experience in LC-HRMS-based early-warning monitoring, including combined RP-HILIC suspect screening and temporal trend analysis of environmental contaminants, are strongly encouraged to apply. Strong experience in LC-HRMS instrumentation, data processing workflows, and large dataset interpretation is essential. Experience with Orbitrap instruments (Thermo Scientific) and Compound Discoverer is also considered a significant merit. Additional merits include experience with cheminformatic tools, statistical analysis, and visualization, as well as knowledge of environmental sampling, contaminant fate, and regulatory frameworks. Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, project development, and leadership is advantageous, as is prior teaching and supervision experience.

Emphasis is also placed on personal characteristics such as communication skills, interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and in a team. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required, as well as experience in delivering research presentations.

About us
