The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 38 000 students and 6 000 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (BioEnv) we have teaching and research activities that stretch from the alpine ecosystem, through forests, cultivated land and streams, all the way into the marine environment. In these environments we study different levels of biological organisation from genes, individuals and populations, to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these fields in order to understand the impact of natural and anthropogenic changes of the environment.

The department is placed at three different localities: in Gothenburg Botanical garden, at Medicinarberget in Gothenburg, and at the marine research station that is run by the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Infrastructure-Kristineberg. The current position is placed at the Gothenburg Botanical garden.

Project description
Society faces major challenges in the production of sufficient amounts of biomass for energy and material production. Biomass from microalgae that are rich in oil has great potential as a complement to biomass from forests and agriculture. The success of microalgae as feedstock depends on achieving high yield with minimum energy input. The goal of this project is to develop an energy-efficient system for whole year outdoor cultivation of marine microalgae. This entails identifying micro algal strains that are productive and can cope with the dynamic climate of the Swedish west coast.

The project is mainly laborative and will be carried out in collaboration with researchers from the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg and from RISE (Research Institute of Sweden) in Borås.

Job assignments
This employment has the main task to identify suitable microalgal strains for a whole-year rotation model on the Swedish west coast using microbiology, physiology, molecular biology and analytical methods for algal cultures. Certain periods will be spent at RISE facilities in Borås. Specific research topics associated with the research project include cultivation of marine microalgae (e.g., the diatom Skeletonema), photosynthesis and production of lipids in microalgae.

The employment
This is a fixed-term employment for 24 months, 100%, starting as soon as possible or upon agreement.

Eligibility
To be eligible for employment as a researcher, the applicant must have a PhD exam in a relevant subject, microbiology, biotechnology, biology or similar, as outlined in the advertisement. The exam must be finished before closing date for this announcement.

Assessments
We are seeking a motivated person to work in the project about energy-efficient cultivation of marine microalgae for biomass production. Scientific experience in the relevant area is assessed based on publications, previous experience as a postdoc and participation in conferences. Experience with handling and cultivation of microalgae (the diatom Skeletonema), with physiological methods (e.g., chlorophyll fluorescence) and molecular biology methods (e.g., RNA work) are desired. Basic knowledge in analytical methods for analysis of algal biomass is a merit. Excellent communication skills (spoken and written) in English is necessary since we work in an international environment.
