The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 47 500 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The department is placed at three different localities: in GU:s facilities in Gothenburg Botanical Garden, at Medicinarberget 18A in Gothenburg and at Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The current position is placed at GU:s facilities in Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

Project description

The position will contribute to the environmental risk assessment of complex chemical mixtures in the aquatic environment and will be placed during the coming years in the context of the work of the FRAM centre (www.fram.gu.se). The aim is to assess the environmental consequences of chemical pollution from a holistic perspective, by considering both the chemical and biological complexity of real-world exposure scenarios.

In particular, the work will assess the impact of environmentally realistic chemical mixtures on microbial and invertebrate communities. The work will be implemented during the coming years as a collaboration between various Departments at the University of Gothenburg, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig (Germany) and several collaborators in Chile. Additional projects might be implemented in other international locations.

Job assignments

The employment includes work at various location, in particular at the University of Gothenburg and the Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig. Shorter periods will also need to be spent for field sampling campaigns in Chile and potentially other European and non-European countries.

Techniques used during the work include large-volume and passive sampling of water and sediment, sampling of biota, chemical analyses via high-resolution mass-spectrometry- hplc/GC, as well as DNA- and RNA-based assessments of microbial and invertebrate biodiversity. Environmental DNA (eDNA) methods will be employed to characterize the overall biodiversity in chemically exposed ecosystems.

The employment

This is a permanent employment, 100%, starting on the 1st of January 2020 or upon agreement. Probationary period will be used.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment as a researcher, the applicant must have a PhD exam in a relevant subject (ecotoxicology, chemical risk assessment) as outlined in the advertisement. The exam must be finished before closing date for this announcement.

Assessments

We are seeking a motivated ecotoxicologist with documented expertise in the field-based assessment of complex chemical pollution, focusing on natural invertebrate and microbial communities. Proven experience in state-of-the art modern chemical-analytical techniques is necessary. Proven experience in modern molecular techniques, especially DNA- and RNA-based sequencing techniques are essential. Proven experience with bioinformatics, statistics and general data analyses using R are a major plus. Experience in regulator ecotoxicology and chemical risk assessment are a merit.

Excellent communication skills, written and spoken, in English and Spanish, are necessary since we work in an international environment and in order to be able to implement the work with our collaboration partners during the field campaigns in Chile. A driving license is a must. Familiarity with the geography and local conditions in Chile are a merit.
