The University of Gothenburg tackles society's challenges with diverse knowledge. 49 000 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The department of Biological and Environmental Sciences is placed at three different localities: in GU:s facilities in Gothenburg Botanical Garden, at Medicinarberget 18A in Gothenburg and at Kristineberg Marine Research Station. The current position is placed at Kristineberg Marine Research Station.

Work description

The research in this position will primarily focus on coastal marine vegetated habitats (e.g. seagrass, macroalgae, mangrove and salt marshes) with the major goal to understand their role as natural carbon sinks. This includes to examine processes, from microbial- to seascape scales, that are of importance for carbon dynamics and greenhouse gas exchange in these productive coastal environments. The knowledge will be used to identify hotspots of carbon sequestration within the complex seascape environment and to understand the fate of stored carbon as potential sources for greenhouse gas emissions.

The research questions are well linked to an on-going environmental monitoring program that describe and assess the state of vegetation-covered marine ecosystems along the Swedish west coast. A major part of this work research and monitoring will be carried out using scientific diving, and educational skills will be required to be able to lead and develop the existing center for research diving and education of scientific diving at Kristineberg Marine Research Station.

The research will be conducted within the scientific frame of BioEnv in collaboration with the Department for Marine Sciences at University of Gothenburg, Department of Ecology, Environment and Plants Sciences at Stockholm University and Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam.

Techniques used within the research of this position will include large-scale field efforts (surveys and experiments); taxonomic evaluation of marine vegetation; biogeochemical, microbial and molecular analyses in the laboratory; and statistical/spatial modelling.

Job assignments

This employment includes:

• Leading the research on coastal marine vegetation systems with focus on how different ecological, physiological and biogeochemical processes and interactions between different organisms (from micro- to macro-scale) affect the storage and emission of organic (and inorganic) carbon in marine sediments in both temperate and tropical areas.
• Conduct field studies and experiments, laboratory analysis using biogeochemical, microbial and molecular methods. Statistical analysis, spatial (scenario-based) modelling, and writing scientific publications are important. Part of the fieldwork will be conducted on the east African coast (together with collaborating scientists from Tanzania).
• Monitoring the status and changes of macroscopic marine vegetation on rocky- and sediment bottoms in Skagerrak, Kattegatt and Öresund. The program framework also includes analysis, quality control, evaluation and statistical processing of data from the surveys as well as reporting of data.
• Lead and be responsible for for scientific diving at Kristineberg marine research station and the existing center for education of scientific divers at the station. This work assignment involves leading and developing the facility, teaching and marketing of education at the center, and be take part of relevant meetings and symposia in national and international environments. Further, the assignment includes establishing rules for scientific diving at the center for promoting safety at work or for education.

The employment

This is a permanent employment of 100%, starting as soon as possible or upon agreement.

Eligibility

To be eligible for employment as a researcher, the applicant must have a PhD exam in marine ecology or relevant subject. The exam must be finished before closing date for this announcement.

• Leading projects and facility development
• Documented pedagogic skills in general and with regard to scientific diving
• Good communication and cooperation skills
• Driving license
• Experienced boat driver
