hela Sverige Swerea SICOMP AB is a research institute working with research and development within the area of polymer fiber composites. We are located in Piteå and Mölndal and conduct research and industrial assignments is areas such as aircraft, space, marine, transport and energy. 40% of our projects are
conducted in co-operation with international partners, mostly in Europe. To meet the increasing demand of our services we are now in the position to hire more qualified personnel.
Researcher in Biobased Composites
Products manufactured from polymer composite such as glass or carbon fibre composites have been used in different constructions for years. The mechanical properties of composites combining low density with high stiffness and strength mean that they are mainly used in products where low mass is of particular importance. Light weight is a key performance characteristic in some products such as sports equipment. In cars and airplanes, light-weight constructions lead not only to better performance but also to lower energy or fuel consumption. Therefore there is a drive to use these types of materials in vehicles when minimizing the effect of a product on the environmental over its life-time.
Typically, in the composite industry synthetically manufactured fibres such as high strength carbon, glass or aramid (Kevlar) fibres are used. These fibres are embeddedin and held together by a petroleum based thermoset or thermoplastic resin, e.g.
epoxy, unsaturated polyester or polypropylene. In other words, most of the components of a composite come from non-renewable resources. In an effort to make fibre composites even more environmentally friendly, we conduct material science
based research and try and find biobased material alternatives to the synthetic materials. The aim is to be able to offer, in the near future, environmentally friendly composite material along with the necessary manufacturing methods for these materials where the components are based on 100 % sustainable resources and the
properties of the final material are the equivalent of glass fibre composites with a high content of continuous fibres. The issues we work with are focused on manufacturing i.e. how these new materials (fibres or plastics) should be used to obtain high
performance composites? How do we modify existing composite manufacturing methods to achieve high performance materials?
The current vacancy is for someone who can partake in and, when necessary, lead their own research projects. The aims of these projects are typically to develop new composite materials, to assess manufacturing methods, characterise the material in
terms of its suitability for processing or to establish the relationship between manufacturing and the resulting characteristics. Part of the work will be of practical nature combining manufacturing with advanced materials analysis. Another part of the work is to test hypothesis established from experimental observations with the
help of theoretical models. The models can either be existing ones or those that you developed yourself.
We are looking for someone with a masters degree in chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering or the equivalent. A research degree is advantageous. Personal attributes that we are looking for in the applicant are an ability to meet goals, good analytical skills as well an ability to comminicate well both verbally and in writing.
