Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
We are looking for a person who wants to do research within aquatic microbial ecology with special focus on linking community dynamics to antimicrobial resistance.
About the position
The legacy of antibiotic applications in recent decades has sparked a global public health crisis. A substantial portion of the administered antibiotics eventually reaches the environment in their natural forms or as metabolites. Environmental factors and species interactions have key roles in the successful dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). While there has been extensive research into the underlying mechanisms of AMR and the clinically relevant antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), there is limited knowledge on how ecological processes in natural ecosystems drive and regulate the emergence and spread of AMR. Specifically, the holder of the advertised position will investigate the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance in aquatic environments through the lens of community coalescence (mixing) processes. The overall goal is to understand how coalescence events influence community properties and functions and to what extent this process contributes to the spread of AMR.

You will engage in independent research that align with ongoing activities in the Division of Microbial Ecology. The work will involve analysis of metagenomic datasets to study effects of mixing events on aquatic microorganisms, small-scale laboratory experiments and field surveys along river-to-sea transects with the overall ambition to assess and understand factors controlling the dissemination of AMR in our landscape. The work responsibilities also include experimental design, data handling, writing of publications and knowledge dissemination. You will also take part in supervision of student(s) at various levels.

Your profile
The successful candidate must meet the following qualifications:

• A doctoral degree in a subject relevant for the position, such as biology, microbial ecology, aquatic sciences or related subjects
• Strong laboratory skills relevant for the position, including experimental microbial microcosms and ecosystem-scale microbial community analysis
• A minimum of 3 years' postdoctoral experience relevant for the subject of the position
• Expertize in bioinformatics
• Scientific proficiency within the subject of the position, demonstrated by a strong publication record and awarded grants
• Ability to work both independently and in teams
• Fluency in English, knowledge of Swedish is a merit

The following skills/experiences are seen as merits:

• Previous contributions to community coalescence studies
• Previous work with metagenomic data processing and analysis
• Deep understanding of community ecology concepts and theories
• Experience of ecological modelling
• Competence in data analyses in R and Python
• Supervision of undergraduate students
• Teaching activities

About us
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, microbial ecology as well as on environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology. The department has about 150 employees, of which approximately half are researchers/doctoral students and the other half are technical and administrative staff.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) has a key role in the development for sustainable life, based on science and education. Through our focus on the interaction between humans, animals and ecosystems and the responsible use of natural resources, we contribute to sustainable societal development and good living conditions on our planet. Our main campuses are located in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala, however, the university also operates at research stations, experimental forests and teaching sites throughout Sweden.

SLU has around 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and doctoral students and a turnover of over SEK 3 billion. We are investing in attractive environments on all of our campuses. We strive to provide a work environment characterised by inclusivity and gender equality, where different experiences generate conversations between people and pave the way for science, creativity and development. Therefore, we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
