The Department of Aquatic Resources conducts environmental monitoring and assessment, consulting, research and education in aquatic ecology with focus on fish and shellfish. The department is SLU's largest and has more than 180 employees at three main locations: Lysekil, Öregrund and Stockholm (Drottningholm), as well as four field stations.
The department is highly focused on data collection and analysis of fish, fisheries and ecosystems, and is characterized by intensive collaborations with industry, public agencies and NGO:s. This creates a vital research environment and gives us unique opportunities to develop knowledge with high societal impact.

Duties:
You will work in a team of people working on fish stock assessment with a responsibility for delivering results of stock assessment to national and international users. Your main task will be to apply stock assessment models for different fish and shellfish stocks and to develop and adapt the models to the needs of different recipients. You will also develop and use models for spatial analysis of data, survey standardisation and Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE), as well as contributing to the work on multi-species models.
The post involves participation in international working groups, entailing trips and work away from the institute.
Qualifications:
You have a PhD degree in ecology or other relevant field. You have good knowledge in different types of data analysis as well as a broad experience in working with different types of models (e.g. SS3) for stock assessment.
Good programming skills in R is a requirement meaning that you write your own scripts and functions as well as analyzing and visualizing large amounts of data. Knowledge in more advanced R-programming is a merit, especially if you have experience in FLR. Previous experience in analysis of European fisheries and work on stock assessment at international level, e.g. within the framework of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is also meriting.
Your personal qualities in addition to you work experiences are of great importance. You need to be able to handle short deadlines, quickly familiarize yourself with new issues, identify key issues and make quick decisions. Good collaboration ability is very important, but you also need to be able to work independently. Professionally you need to speak and write English fluently. Swedish language skills are not necessary but are an advantage.
