SIPRI seeks a Researcher or Senior Researcher to conduct research and advisory work on dual-use and arms trade control issues.

Established in 1966, SIPRI is consistently ranked as one of the world's top think tanks. The institute is dedicated to independent research into peace, conflict and security and is known worldwide for its flagship publication, the SIPRI Yearbook, and its databases. SIPRI is based in Stockholm, and has well-established, on-the-ground partnerships and operational networks across the globe. The staff of SIPRI is international and the working language is English.

Monitoring and analysing the dynamics of international arms transfers and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) has always been at the core of SIPRIs research agenda. SIPRI also conducts policy-relevant research and capacity-building activities to strengthen and develop international, regional and national standards for controlling international transfers of arms and dual-use items. Recent projects have provided input to the negotiations on the Arms Trade Treaty, reviewed measures for strengthening transfer controls for dual-use items and conventional weapons, and provided expertise to a range of governments in enhancing strategic trade controls.

The (Senior) Researcher will:
(a) Conduct research on key issues and challenges related to dual-use and arms trade control and contribute to an innovative and policy-relevant research agenda;
(b) Participate in capacity-building activities in the area of dual-use and arms trade control;
(c) Develop projects and funding proposals to support the Programmes existing initiatives and new activities;
(d) Produce high-quality publications on issues relating to dual-use and arms trade controls;
(e) Represent the Programme in meetings, conferences and other relevant forums;
(f) Strengthen and build networks with policymakers and experts; and
(g) Respond to media and public queries.

SIPRI seeks a dynamic individual with the potential to make an outstanding contribution to the Institutes research and capacity-building activities in the area of dual-use and arms trade control. Applicants must have demonstrated project management skills; a track record in working with governments and international organizations, as well as involvement in capacity-building and advisory activities; and a detailed understanding of national, regional and international policy debates and processes in the field of arms transfers and the broader strategic trade control context. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team in an international environment.

Additional prerequisites include:
(a) a graduate degree in political science, international relations, law, security studies or another relevant discipline;
(b) at least five years of professional experience in the field of arms or dual-use trade control as a researcher, analyst or policymaker;
(c) fundraising experience;
(d) excellent communication skills;
(e) some experience in dealing with the media; and
(f) fluency in English (prior knowledge of Swedish is not required). Additional languages are an advantage.

SIPRI is committed to achieving workforce diversity in terms of gender, nationality and culture. To apply, send a short cover letter, your cv (including a list of publications), two samples of recent relevant work; and the names of three potential referees. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
