Main responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the Researcher is delivery of data collection and analysis.
The Researcher will be responsible for:
• Conducting research by collecting, cleaning, analysing and interpreting data;
• Disseminating research findings;
• Fundraising for their own research and supporting larger proposals with the Peace and Development Cluster;
• Mentoring junior staff and, if applicable, managing research assistants and interns.
In their work, the Researcher will collaborate with others to fulfil these responsibilities:
• Working closely with the Director of Studies, Peace and Development on indicators associated with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (peace, justice and inclusive governance);
• Fundraising: With other members of the Sustainable Development team and the Director of Studies in Peace and Development and in collaboration with the Grants Manager;
• Outreach: in association with the Communications Director and the Managing Editor.

Main tasks
• Collecting and analysing data;
• Designing, conducting, writing high quality research;
• Communicating research findings through research papers, reports, policy briefs and other outlets;
• Preparing their own research proposals and contributing to other research proposals within the Peace and Development cluster;
• Collaborating on issues related to sustainable development with other researchers at SIPRI;
• Mentoring junior staff, including disseminating their research;
• Contributing to the success of the annual Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development;
• Taking part in the collective life of the Institute.

SIPRI is seeking a Researcher, Data Scientist/GIS Specialist for our Peace and Development Cluster. SIPRI's Peace and Development Custer looks at what drives conflict and what drives long-term, positive change by analysing economic, social, political and environmental factors. We contribute to both research and dialogue in order to inform policy and practice to forge a path to peace.

The Data Scientist/GIS Specialist Researcher must have strong quantitative research skills including the ability to collect and integrate large data sets, analyse using statistical software (STATA or other) and the ability to convey results visually and through their writing. They should have a strong knowledge of issues related to the measurement of development. They must work well with others, including mentoring junior staff. All SIPRI staff are expected to have a commitment to SIPRI's values and mission.

The Researcher should have as a minimum the following:
• 1-2 years of experience in academic research and of writing;
• A record of publications that is commensurate with the length of time worked in research;
• A proven ability to work and deliver in small teams;
• Ease of working in English both orally and written, with further language proficiency considered an asset.

Varaktighet, arbetstid
The contract could start as early as October. There is flexibility in start date to encourage a diverse range of candidates to apply. The appointment will be two-year term. The post is full time.
