Project to strengthen civil society contributions to peace, security and development in Mali

SIPRI seeks a Researcher to work with civil society organizations in Mali to strengthen their capacity in field research, and help develop a strategy for their contribution to peace, security and development in Mali. Funding for this project has been provided by the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida)

The main tasks of this position are to develop and coordinate training, education and research activities, together with a partner organization in Mali, and in consultation with the Head of Project; undertake research on topics of relevance for the project, and write-up and present findings; and participate in the data collection process and analysis of military expenditure developments in African countries. The project requires fluency in written and spoken English and French

The position will be based in Stockholm, Sweden, with some travel to Mali. The successful applicant will preferably work from 1 September 2013, or as soon as possible thereafter, until 30 May 2015

Main tasks and responsibilities
• Develop capacity-building modules on field research for researchers in Mali
• Conduct workshops in Mali and Sweden on field research
• Contribute to other types of capacity-building content, including development of customized course material, and planning and implementation of project workshops in Mali and Sweden
• Contribute to the development of both theoretical and practical approaches regarding the role of civil society in strengthening peace, security and development
• Conduct research and information gathering on issues of relevance to the project
• Prepare fact sheets, background papers and academic articles on issues of relevance to the project
• Participate in the data-collection process and provide analysis of military expenditure developments in African countries, for inclusion in the SIPRI Yearbook and elsewhere
• Participate in preparation of project workshops and project meetings in Mali and Sweden, including logistics and administration

Qualifications and essential attributes
• A PhD or other postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline for a project on peace, security and development in West African countries
• An in-depth knowledge of francophone African history and economic, political and security issues
• Experience of working with civil society organization on capacity building in the field of peace and security, preferably in francophone Africa
• Fluency in written and spoken English and French
• Ability and demonstrated experience in writing at an academic level
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• An interest in and understanding of issues relating to international peace and security
