Researcher
Nematology, Underground Communication and Ecology, Plant
Protection Biology
The (postdoctoral) researcher will conduct studies on chemical communication in soil-living nematodes with an emphasis on the role of plant and microbial metabolites in host finding.
Underground Communication and Ecology, including Nematology is part of the long-term strategy of the Department of Plant Protection Biology. The project will be coordinated with
ongoing studies of plant defense reactions against pathogens and insect herbivores. It is expected that the candidate takes initiatives to interact with other European and Scandinavian research groups, to actively participate in the design of research projects for the acquisition of external funding. The candidate will be given possibilities to develop specialist skills in chromatographic chemical analysis, molecular tools and nematode bioassay techniques. Current prioritized areas of research are host-finding cues in potato cyst nematodes, host-finding mechanisms in phytophagous and entomophagous
nematodes, the importance of nematodes in changing climate, including their impact on plant communities, and monitoring and detection of invasive nematodes.
The host department, Department of Plant Protection Biology, belongs to the Faculty of Landscape Planning, Horticulture and Agricultural Sciences, at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and is located at Alnarp in Southern Sweden. Research and teaching are carried out within the following areas: Integrated Plant Protection, Chemical Ecology,
Resistance Biology, and Nematology. The researcher will interact with colleagues from these respective areas.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in biology, chemistry, or other relevant discipline, combined with a dedication to build a research group. The candidate should thus be able to demonstrate strong organizational skills, and the capacity of planning, executing and analyzing laboratory and field experiments. He/she should be willing to acquire new skills and independently adapt own skills to new circumstances and to interact with other researchers. Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. Previous work with chromatographic techniques or sterile work is an advantage.
