Department of Biomedical Science and Veterinary Public Health
Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health (BVF), Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden.

BVF offers an inspiring research environment where we investigate if PFAS exposure causes toxic effects in wildlife and humans, by integrating data from in vitro/vivo bioassays and studies of wildlife/humans. Our goal is to provide new important scientific knowledge as a basis for societal risk management of the rapidly emerging environmental problems with PFAS. The current project is a collaboration between SLU, University of Gothenburg, Lund University, Stockholm University, Umeå University, the Swedish National Food Agency, Karolinska Institutet and the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE).

Background: PFAS contamination of drinking water is a rapidly growing problem worldwide. In Sweden, several waterworks have closed down or have installed costly purification techniques due to PFAS contamination of groundwater. Exposure assessment is a vital part of PFAS risk assessment, and currently human exposure is mainly determined by measurements of PFAS in blood. This approach is very costly and time consuming. The aim of the project is to develop physiologically-based toxicokinetic (PBTK) models for human PFAS exposure. The models will be used to predict PFAS levels in blood of exposed individuals based on concentrations in drinking water. The models may also be used for reverse dosimetry, i.e. to calculate levels in drinking water based on PFAS in blood. Both approaches are important in the risk assessment of drinking water PFAS exposure, and for our understanding of the causal relation between PFAS exposure and health outcomes in exposed populations.

Duties:
Data from already screened populations will be analyzed using statistical multivariate models to check the associations between serum PFAS concentrations and drinking water concentrations, and factors (residence time, sex, BMI, age) that may affect these associations. PBTK modelling of PFAS is performed in highly exposed populations to identify factors that affect elimination and to compute biological half times of PFAS. Already published models specific for PFAS are used as a starting point. Available data on PFAS levels in blood, food, dust and drinking water, including duration of exposure, will be used along with experimental and in silico data.

Qualifications:
PhD in toxicology, pharmacology, biology, chemistry or equivalent within the last 6 years. Profound experience in toxicokinetic/pharmacokinetic modeling (PK/TK, PBPK/PBTK), use of multivariate statistical methods, and soft ware platforms used in modeling/statistical analyses (R, Matlab, Python, KNIME, Berkley Madonna, GastroPlus, SimCyp, WinNonlin, NONMEM etc.) is required, as well as documented proficiency in English (spoken and written). We are seeking a highly motivated, ambitious and enthusiastic person that is able to work independently as well as in a team. The appointment will be based, among other things, on the applicant 's motivation for the application.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
